Venezuela's Chavez: UN "outdated body" condemns use of military action to impose peace

ROME - Labeling the United Nations an "outdated body," Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez contended Wednesday that the organization was unable to solve the world's problems.

His denunciation came while addressing the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, a Rome-based agency which was celebrating World Food Day.

"The U.N. has become an outdated body, an anachronism. It doesn't respond to the challenges of the world," Chavez said during a one-hour-long speech.

The World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa in September was an example of the United Nation's shortcomings, according to Chavez.

World leaders, he said, had failed to commit themselves to the recommendations made by experts on how to safeguard the environment.

Chavez, who was in Italy as part of a four-nation tour in Europe, also condemned the use of military action to solve international conflicts.

"Peace is not something you impose with bombs, threats and invasion, but you achieve it with love, justice and dignity," he said.

He appeared to be referring to the U.S.-led military campaign last year which toppled the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, and pressure by the United States and Britain on the United Nations to authorize military force against Iraq if it does not comply with demands to allow inspections for weapons of mass destruction.

Chavez, whose left-wing government has proposed land redistribution reforms, blamed neo-liberal, free market policies for the "murderous hurricane of inequality which is the scourge of the world."

"Our continent (South America) has received one of the largest injections of neo-liberalism, injections of poison," he said.

Later, talking to reporters, Chavez also spoke of the situation in Venezuela, the world's fifth-largest exporter of oil, but where 80 percent of its people live in poverty, inflation is surging and the army is restless.

He again rejected calls by the opposition for him to step down and call early elections.

Opposition business and labor leaders have called for a general strike to start on Oct. 21 in a bid to paralyze Venezuela.

Chavez has visited France and after Italy will go to Britain and Norway.

HELP me out please. I have been volunteered to give a half hour talk on the UN "System". I need a heirachy chart showing votes and members.

The UN's own website skews the picture, charting it sideways, even though it is a classic vertical organization just like USSR and ComChina (which is a similarity I may mention).

A search so far has been illuminating and I get a few kooky sites out there: A horoscope chart of the UN !! It reads the Israeli -- PLO confict too - its a classic:

Chavez: Colombian Rebel Contact 'Humanitarian'-denies collaborating with FARC*** The four journalists who presented the video, Patricia Poleo, Ibeyise Pacheco, Marianella Salazar and Martha Colomina, said it showed the Chavez government was collaborating with the rebels behind the back of the Colombian government. Common criminals and gangs often cooperate with rebels.

Earlier this year cattlemen proposed forming private militias to fend off local criminals and rebels from neighboring Colombia. The idea was abandoned as President Hugo Chavez suspended the issuance of new gun licenses and threatened to jail would-be militiamen. ***

Chavez is using the country's revenues to help the poor, redistributing the land giving the it to Venezuelans and helping to support neighbors so they will not be indebted to U.S. companies. Wow! Social programs that care about the average person and raise the living standard of Latin America...defying the illegal embargo against Cuba...uh oh, like that Christian Robertson said, we should take this guy out before others get the wild idea that they should be treated with dignity! When I say monopolistic media outlets, let me clarify for the weak minded. When you read a story on any situation you need to check multiple news sources outside this country. In case you are unaware, which I suspect you are, these news corporations are privately owned. CBS, NBC, ABC, whatever, it's all the same. Do you not agree that U.S. actions are dictated by big business? Everyone in America serves the interests of U.S. monopolies and to think that one can reach another conclusion proves your own ignorance about the situation. And yes, under international law, the embargo is illegal. It has been so for many years with it's only backers being the U.S. and Israel. About the nuclear missiles during the so called Cuban missile crisis, you should probably do your homework on that too. I guess it was OK to point nukes at Moscow when the U.S. placed them in turkey at the height of the Cold War. Apparently nuclear weapons are the only deterrent to U.S. monopolies invading other countries, plundering there riches in the name of freedom. And, I bet, you do not even recognize that the U.S. is the biggest terror sponsor in the world. Killing millions of Latin Americans in the name of free market policies. Oh, that Castro is evil, right? I have been to Cuba and the hardships they face are a direct result of the Helms-Burton act. It's OK for the U.S. to withhold medical supplies from the people of Cuba, but America says they are punishing Castro and not his people, right? Despite everything that U.S. imperialism has imposed on Cuba, health care is free. Along with education. You bad mouth Castro when Cuba boasts a population that is 70% college educated? And this is a so called third world country? I don't remember the last time Cuba sent an army to terrorize it's neighbors. The only army they send is an army of doctors, like the ones that serve though out the world and without asking for anything in return. My father was in Algeria in the 60's, when Cuba sent over 50,000 doctors to help with the medical crisis they were dealing with at the time. Castro IS evil! Helping the poor, how deplorable.
