The USO Canteen FReeper Style
Delivering a Touch of Home

.

.

A Touch of Home

.

This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.

Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.

Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.

This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

Snow Bunny

.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.

Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.

We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.

So, to the men and women who answered the call,
in both times of war and peace, thank you.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae

Thanks for sharing this information and photo. I think I've actually seen this plane. I used to visit the Wright Patterson Air Force museum when I was a bit younger. Looks familiar!!

Oh! By the way, HELLO! How are you today??

The Canadian Climate

Canada has two anthems, two languages and two versions of history.There is the assumption that Canada has only two seasons as well: Winter and Not Winter. But this isn't true.

In fact, Canada has no fewer that six distinct seasons: Tax; Hockey; More Hockey; Still More Hockey; Summer (also known as the July Long Weekend, also known as "Was that it?"); and finally Good God, Isn't the Hockey Season Over by Now?!

In defiance of both Einstein and the space-time continuum, hockey in Canada now lasts sixteen months a year. Both the tax season and summer have been swamped by hockey - and that's just regular hockey. The playoffs stretch things out even further. Glaciers move faster than the standard NHL season. There are teams with sideburns and disco hairdos still circling the ice trying to finish the 1974 season. So if you are going to be Canadian, you will have to get used to this. Hockey is the Musak of Canadian Society. It's always there, in the background, like radiation or white noise.

I think you DID see it. The Air Power posts are based on the USAF Museum displays.

As for me, doing OK. I gotta go to the Trannie shop and see how much my car is going to take to get fixed.

It was such a great experience. I didn't realize how fortunate I was living so close to the museum. My father told me once that every place he took me when I was growing up..I'd thank him later for it. (whispering) He was right. LOL!

As for your car, BAD CAR! VERY BAD! SNAP OUT OF IT!! I'm sorry you have to go and spend money to fix your very bad car.

You call it poetic. Others would disagree. It's babbling. I don't mind. I babbled from the moment I was born. My poor parents! LOL!

Dear Snow Bunny, I was on vacation and missed the Lovely, well deserved Tribute for you on 10/7. So today I Thank You for all you have done for our Military, the Canteen and for America. I am Blessed to know you. I am going to share with you today my yesterday, and Thank You for encouraging the support of our Troops and Veterans.

Yesterday I went to the service station to have my car winterized, oil change, etc. I was reading the "Commieday" AKA Long Island Newsday, as hard as it is to read the left views, I force myself to do so. Need to know what they are thinking and writing about. A gentleman with a big smile walked into the waiting area. I immediately noticed his United States of America cap and I struck up a conversation with him.

He told me he was a Korean War Veteran. I Thanked him for his service, he appeared to be embarrassed by my thanking him and told me he was Proud to serve his country and he was just doing a job. I told him it was more then a job, that him and those who are serving now and in the past have given us all our Freedom and it is greatly appreciated. There was a gleam in his eyes when I thanked him and I knew he was grateful to hear those words.

Although we are from different generations, we had a lot in common. Both conservatives with a deep love for our country. We spoke of current events, and shared the same views. We both know of families that lost loved ones on 9/11. He then brought up the Clintons..Bill, Hillary and their antics, I think his blood pressure as well as mine was rising as we were discussing them. We both support President Bush, I told him that I attended the Inaugural Ceremony and how Proud I was to be there. Turns out he also attended, with his wife.

I told him about Free Republic and the Canteen. I try to recruit wherever I go :-) I told him about the wonderful deeds that Snow Bunny and all Canteeners do to support our Military, past and present. He was happy to hear about it and appreciative of all who contribute in the Canteen.

One of his wishes is that ALL Veterans ban together and let their voices be heard loud and clear. That all Veterans unite and become political. He spoke of the WW2 Veterans, and how they are dieing and leaving us every day. He is saddened about this, as we all are. I told him about my Dad and how Proud I am of my Dad's Military history.

The mechanic came in and told me my car was ready. I paid my bill. This kind Korean War Veteran shook my hand and told me that he enjoyed our chat, once again I thanked him. I got into my little black car (I really do have a small black car, not a convertible :-) As I was driving away, he waved to me. I smiled and waved back thinking this chore that I dread (going to the service station) turned into something wonderful that fine day.

After all that chatting, you would think we would have formally introduced ourselves, we didn't. We were just 2 Patriots chatting about the Country we Love.

GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS AND VETERANS

~~~Colleen~~~
Thanks for the ping, Johnny.
Tomkow .... your jokes are always so funny.
Two rednecks are driving down the highway, drinking their beer, when flashing lights from a policeman appear in the driver's rear-view mirror.
''Don't worry!'' says the driver to his friend, ''Just do exactly what I tell you and everything will work out perfectly. First, we'll peel the labels off our beer bottles and we'll each stick one on our forehead. Now shove all of the bottles under the front seat! And, let me do all the talking!''
They pull over to the side of the road and the cop walks up to the car. He shines his flashlight into the car and looks at the two drunks. ''Have you been drinking?'' he asks them.
''Oh no Sir,'' replies the driver.
''I noticed you weaving back and forth across the highway. Are you sure you haven't been drinking?'' the cop asks.
''Oh, no sir,'' the drunk answers. ''We haven't had a thing to drink tonight.''
''Well, I've got to ask you,'' says the cop, ''What on earth are those things on your forehead?''
''That's easy, Officer,'' says the drunk. ''You see, we're both alchoholics, and we're on the patch!''
Well, my cubicle duties can only be performed when a crisis arises. Since everyone now knows that the ON button on a computer will actually TURN ON THE COMPUTER. We've alleviated a lot of confusion at work. It's a beautiful experience to watch the LIGHT BULB click on when you can see a user realize what the ON/OFF switch on a computer is for. It's just something that gets me so darn emotional. LOL!
It's not raining here, Ma. It's just looking cloudy. I'll take clouds!! I'm already depressed that you are at work and I'm getting ready to take a nap. Well, after I have some chocolate chip cookies and milk. LOL!
