The USO Canteen FReeper Style
Delivering a Touch of Home
.
.
A Touch of Home
.
This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.
Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.
Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.
This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.
Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.
We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.
So, to the men and women who answered the call,
in both times of war and peace, thank you.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Linda, you have created a monster. ROTFLMAO!! Duchess, you had best use your title wisely. LOL!! Training classes may be in the offing if I find a single item not shipshape. I know you don't mind the handcuffs from the Coast Guardsmen, but the brig will be solitary confinement.

Pretty busy day on watch today.
NO real cases but 3 boats were practicing fire fighting drills
using a 4th training boat they set on fire.
A 3 person special training team has been on base all week conducting training.
I got a "Well Done" by the Chief in charge of the drills at the end of the drills.
A crewman from the Cutter ORACAS reported on board today for duty,
he just got transfered to the base from the cutter.
The CO told me today, after I said I was having a great day,
"Of course you are, you are here with us."
NOW the exciting NEWS!!!!!.
What's better than Coast Gurad Day?
Well not better but really different?
Coast Guard Night each Wed night (my Fri Night)
Each "my Fri" night 2 boats go out at night and train with a helo.
Since I now get off work at 5PM I have enough time to drive to the base when my work week ends and go out with the boats.
Then return the next AM for watch.
The helo drills will be every "my Fri" night till the end of the year and probably after that also.
The only times they would not be
if it's to windy for the helo, or if the helo is on a real case.
So every "Fri" night I'll be on the boats , in the dark,
out in the ocean with the helo right above
lowering the rescue basket or emergency pump.
What a great way to spend the 1st night off of work!

Well, it's time for me to call it a night, too.
Tonk, you be careful on those nighttime exercises...we don't want training to turn into a rescue of your sorry tail if you get washed overboard in all the excitement!! The Canteen gurlz wouldn't know what to do if you weren't here with the flowers and fireplace every day!

Dang - Part II
I finally get the energy to keep up with you guys and everyone is leaving. I should, too, since I ought to try to stay awake tomorrow and get some work done.
Tonk, take care, whatever you are doing. (I didn't read the whole thread.) My son just told me tonight he is going to Airborne school. That brings him closer to me so maybe I can see him one of the weekends he is nearby.. Thanks to ALL of you who serve.
