Dept. of Education--Try Reading This

TRY READING THIS

The Department of Education is displaying a series of charts that one could argue undermines the federal agency's very raison d'etre.

"Promoting its 'No Child Left Behind' agenda, the department's statistics page reveals some embarrassing truths about federal education spending," says Citizens Against Government Waste.

One chart trumpets that from 1996 to 2003, federal education spending increased by 132 percent (compared with 48 percent during the same period for national defense). On the other hand, since 1996, 12th-grade science scores have declined.

Worse, after $321 billion in federal education outlays since 1965, fourth-grade reading scores have remained flat - at 32 percent proficiency - for three decades.

The Education Department was created in 1979. It has an annual budget of $55 billion.

The Dept. of Education spends 55 BILLION dollars a year and doesn't teach one child. It's all paper work for education bureaucrats. Please send these simple statistics to everyone on your email list.

I wouldn't be surprised if these statistics were put up by a non-lifer at the request of someone high up. Face it, elimination of the DOE is one of the great unspoken wishes of Conservative Republicans. What better way to vanquish it, than to advertise its impotence?

Face it, elimination of the DOE is one of the great unspoken
wishes of Conservative Republicans.

It was a campaign issue with Ronald Reagan and even though he
had both houses the first 2 years, it was never mentioned. Keep in
mind they rarely actually mean the things they say. He did manage
to kill the 55 and stay alive idiocy of Jimmy Carter though.

Few remember that Jack Kemp had to force the 30% tax cut on him,
finally setteled for a 10,10,10 over 3 years, which is not
nearly 30% but sounds like it.

To all:
As a public school teacher, I think there are two main problems with education today. (1)My students' parents are not involved in their child's education. (2)There are some teachers who can teach, but can't control a room full children.
