One of the reasons for gestation crates is that pigs will step on their newborns, roll over on them, etc. Confining the space they have to move (although I would agree somewhat cruel) actually saves the lives of piglets.

Let's see: pregnant pigs, dead guys, terrorists, felons. Yup, sounds like your average DNC voting block to me.

"Anyway..that only proves they go insane when locked up."

How do you think this method was discovered? Years ago pigs were raised outdoors and had large pens for farrowing. A large number of "baby pigs" were eaten by their mothers. Farrowing pens were designed to increase the survival of the newborn piglets.

PETA uses emotional approaches to issues and never bothers to do any research. Years ago, when there were more people that grew up on farms and wild animals were part of a persons everyday life... the radical PETA crowd would be recognized for their politcal agenda.

Now, the vast majority of people grow up in the urban environment and the only large experience they have with animals is as pets. The movie "Bambi" is a fantasy and too many people grew up using it as an influance on their life. Thanks to Walt Disney the PETA people can spew their propaganda and most will fall for it.

You do understand the difference between a Constitutional Amendment, a state law and an administratative code don't you?

The Constitutions are supposed to GUIDE the laws, not regulate tiny little provisions that effect a handful of people.....ummm...errr....PIGS!!!

The main objection on this thread seems to be that this is purely a fundraising stunt by PETA. They are blatantly preying on the weak minded because nobody else could possibly think a Constitutional Amendment is appropriate here.

I don't know if you are being sarcastic or not, but I sure do think it is cruel too! In fact, I am really sorry I read this article as it is upsetting!

"The crates cause them to suffer from crippling foot and joint disorders, and to experience chronic stress, depression and other psychological disorders throughout their four-month pregnancy, according to advocates."

This is the part where the article lost it. These advocates show a lack of knowledge about pigs. They need to spend a few years around pigs and get an understanding of how they live.

On the upside... it might be a good idea to get a degree in Hog Psychology now. I'm sure that is in the future agenda.

Good point... did you grow up in an agricultural setting, Sungirl?

Anyway..that only proves they go insane when locked up.

Good grief, who'd want to eat insane bacon?

We've got a veritable menagerie in our house, but if it was a choice between starvation and animal rights, we'd be eating our pets, not each other. What "animal rights" really boils down to, in the end is the attempt to give animals an equal status with humans, with the added and more insidious benefit of undermining the value of human life in the process.

I'm sure Noah made sure his animals had ample crate space on that ark, yes sir!

I got my FL absentee ballot last week and I was surprised to read this proposed amendment. The same day, I got a letter from my county's Republican headquarters. They recommended a "no" vote on this amendment. Sorry, but my husband and I just had to vote in favor of the poor piggy mamas.

Don't forget! There's two FL Supreme Court Justices up for renewal.

4 TO 6 WEEKS?

Every year, billions of animals are reared and confined on factory farms and then sent to slaughterhouses. It is well known that the veal crate is among the most cruel and deplorable of animal husbandry techniques: young veal calves are kept in tiny stalls for their short 16-week lives confined so intensely that they cannot even move. Perhaps less known, but equally cruel and inhumane, is the way female breeding pigs are treated on factory farms.

Breeding sows are confined in barren metal cages – measuring just two feet wide – for almost their entire lives. The enclosures are called “gestation crates.” Pigs are confined in these crates during pregnancy. They cannot exercise or even turn around and are prevented from engaging in natural behaviors or from satisfying basic psychological needs. After they produce a litter of piglets in a farrowing crate, the mother pig is impregnated again and returned to the miserable life of a gestation crate. This cycle is repeated for up to 10 pregnancies.

Gestation crates are so cruel that they have been outlawed in other countries but, surprisingly, they remain common in the United States. The practice of keeping a female pig in a constant state of pregnancy and confined in a tiny crate for her entire life should be illegal.
