Three alleged supporters of Al-Qaeda were planning to set up a cell in Lebanon for members of the organization seeking to re-group, according to State Prosecutor Adnan Addoum.
Addoum said Wednesday that the three, Saudi national Ihab Dafaa and Lebanese Khaled Minawi and Mohammed Sultan, had been transferred to the judiciary from military intelligence.
They were apprehended earlier this month.
Addoum said investigations had indicated that the three would be tried on charges of attacking state security and forming a terrorist organization. Information from preliminary investigations indicated that Minawi had been rounded up and released in connection with the January 2000 clashes between the Lebanese Army and Islamic fundamentalists in Dinnieh.
Judicial sources said that Minawi confessed to being an Al-Qaeda operative and traveling to Turkey to contact an Al-Qaeda operative there named Abdullah Turki, nicknamed Obeida.
Minawi also confessed to meeting Dafaa in Turkey, the sources said.
I never thought I would say that!
