Catholics Urge U.N. to Push Vatican on Sex Scandal
Tue Oct 8, 9:57 AM ET

By Shasta Darlington

ROME (Reuters) - A coalition of Catholic groups and victims of abuse by clergy unveiled a report Tuesday that accused the Vatican (news - web sites) of trying to hide widespread child sex abuse scandals and called on the United Nations (news - web sites) to step in.

"There has been cover-up and collusion not only on the part of the bishops but by the Vatican," said Frances Kissling, president of U.S.-based Catholics for a Free Choice, which spearheaded the research.

"This report shows that sexual abuse in the Catholic church is not an American crisis, it is a global crisis," she said.

The group plans to present its report, highlighting 5,000 alleged cases of abuse by members of the clergy worldwide, to the U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child Wednesday.

"We urge the Committee to take up the serious task of calling the Holy See to account for perpetrating and perpetuating the crisis," the report says.

The delegation stopped in Rome Tuesday to push for talks with the Holy See and present their report to the Vatican press.

The launch of the 40-page document comes as the Vatican prepares to release its official response to rules adopted in June by U.S. bishops to deal with pedophile priests.

U.S. CRISIS

The worst crisis ever to hit the American Catholic Church exploded in January when documents revealed that the Boston Archdiocese reassigned priests accused of molesting children. The scandal spread and led to the dismissal of some 300 priests.

The new rules say a bishop should dismiss a cleric "of any ecclesiastical ministry or function" if there is a "credible" accusation that a priest sexually abused a minor.

The leaders of the U.S. Roman Catholic bishops will visit the Vatican next week for talks centered on the scandals.

Pope John Paul (news - web sites) called U.S. Church leaders to the Vatican for an unprecedented summit in April where he made clear there was no room in the ministry for sex offenders. However, the Vatican is worried the crisis could spark a witch hunt.

Critics say the Holy See is not doing enough.

"If I committed a crime I could write a letter to myself and say: 'I'm sorry, I won't do it again' but I've still got to face governmental and other authorities to deal with the consequences of my actions," said Mark Furnish, a New York attorney who was sexually abused by a priest when he was 12.

The report says 5,000 cases of abuse by Catholic clergy in 20 different countries have been reported in the media since 1995, with some of the allegations referring to incidents as long ago as the 1940s.

The group wants the United Nations to request a full report from the Vatican outlining the problem.

Kissling said the United Nations should consider sanctions if the Holy See fails to resolve the crisis.

A solution would mean bringing an end to sex abuse by clergy, the group said, as well as removing bishops who have transferred offending priests rather than defrocking them and ending what it sees as a policy of secrecy.

The coalition also demanded that the Pope himself apologize to the victims for the abuse.

Here's another a crazy effort by "Catholic for Free Choice," a bunch of so-called Catholics (who are actually pro-abortion, UN-worshipping heretics). If Reuters is "convinced" that these people are really Catholics, I wonder what they think of actual Catholics...

I think you're wrong about this. As far as I know, this is hardly a "bunch" -- I believe Kissling is the only member of CFC.

Seriously.

There's nothing like a scandal to bring out all the "activists" looking to "reform" the Church according to their own agendas.

This really ticks me off. I even heard this BS on our local news. Any reporter with half a brain would know that this group is not Catholic. But that begs the question...

I don't mind the Vatican's butt being on the bunson burner 24/7 over this (preferably something considerably hotter), but the above is rather odd, and has a certain jocular quality to it.

Sanctions against what? The Vatican doesn't really have any kind of economy to speak of.

If this doesn't speak to the desire of totally destroying the church, I don't know what would. The scandal needs a resolution - fast - but getting the UN involved is a BAD idea.

What would be ideal would be if the UN placed sanctions on 'Catholics for a Free Choice' for pretending to be a real Catholic organization.

Kissling used to run an abortion clinic and still pushes abortion. She gets loads of money from the pro-aborts. She was at the forefront on the effort to remove the pro-life plank from the Republican Party Platform. If my meomory serves me correctly, a person who helps another to procure an abortion is 'ipso facto' excommunicated from the Catholic Church. Any scholars in Freeperland who'd like to comment on that aspect?

Catholics for a Free Choice is funded by the Ford Foundation and the Rockefellar Foundation.

A link to their website has caused the United States National Catholic Conference of Bishops to condemn the DNC website (National Democratic Party website).

Catholics for Free Choice is about as Catholic as John D Rockefellar.

Frannie's friends at Planned Parenthood told her all about covering up the sexual abuse of minors. It's their business, after all.

We should thank our bishops for having the cowardice to hand CFC a free soapbox.

I hope the next Pope is another Hildebrand. We need one.

Why doesn't the Church just make an excrption in Frannie's case and just give her the formal boot. She simply is not a Catholic.

Since the UN consists mostly of a bunch of dictators that pretend to represent countries, they have a certain kinship to these orgnaizations that claim to speak for people beyond their true membership.

Why not push for an investigation of the UN's Sex scandal. In many countries where they operate, the UN's military have been involved in sexual attacks on children. But no one in the media will report on this.

Time to get the US OUT OF THE UN AND THE UN OUT OF THE US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
