Militant cell is smashed (AL QAEDA IN GERMANY ALERT)

POLICE revealed last night they had smashed an Islamic terror cell plotting attacks on US military bases.

At least five people were held in raids across Germany. Cops believed that the university-based mob was only weeks from launching deadly operations.

The suspects had developed contacts inside security firms working at US military bases in Germany — which could have given them access to plant bombs.

Other targets were thought to include Jewish centres in Berlin and Frankfurt.

Prosecutors said the group had been formed to “spread Islamic values,” adding: “They planned extremely violent attacks to further their ends.”

Those held included students from a university in Cottbus, eastern Germany.

Three of the hijackers responsible for the September 11 attacks had led seemingly innocent lives as students in Hamburg.

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw flies to the Middle East today to build support for action against Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Mr Straw yesterday said Saddam’s neighbours share many of Britain’s aims on Iraq. He confirmed he would speak to the leaders of Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait and Iran about the threat from the tyrant.

Mr Straw told BBC Radio 4’s The World This Weekend: “Each of these countries has reason to fear Saddam.

Three of them — Jordan, Kuwait and Iran — have been the subject of military action by Saddam.

“Egypt is also worried about the long-term instability caused to the region.”

Mr Straw, who insisted there was no disagreement between Britain and the US over Iraq, will also discuss the need for progress on Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Germany had to do something to show it was serious about terror. Preventing attacks on US military bases is a start.

A very good start. Now they are waking up to the nightmare in their own country and if they don't come out strong right away, it's curtains for the natives.

They always state that they led seemingly innocent lives....there's a lot of that going on here...university profs and 7/11 owners...and they wonder why they get strange looks.

What is scary about these cells is the ability of the members to not arouse suspiction about their lives and activities.
