Saddam Husseins power base is comin under extreme pressure, with members of his inner circle defecting to the opposition or making discreet offers of peace in hope of being spared retribution if the Iraqi leader is toppled, according to Iraqi exiles.
Ayad al-Awi, the head of the opposition Iraqi National Accord, said his group in recent weeks had recieved senior defectors from the Iraqi security services, which form the regiemes nerve centre.
At the same time Kurdish groups said they had recieved secret approaches from military commanders offering to turn their weapons on Saddam when the war began.
They said members of the al-Majid clan, the pillar of Saddams tribal power base, had made contact to seek assurances about their fate.

Sounds encouraging but I don't trust the source.

I was just asking tip about that; there are so many rumors and rumors or rumors lately, I don't know what to believe anymore.
That being said, if this is true, maybe we can just send in a Fox News crew and the whole country will surrender.

I think that it will take one of the elite Special '99' core of Saddams guards to do the job.
Too many of these generals Saddam is already suspicious enough of already

If we would have only listened to the U.N. it never would have come to this. (sarcasm off)

Somewhere I've read that if the Republican Guard is pulled back into the city to defend it then it's expected a lot of them will discreetly disappear and change into civilian clothes and mix with the populace rather than fight it out. Don't know what would would happen but this is one senario to be pondered.

I'm really not too suprised. They can't all be as crazy as saddam. Some of these guys probably want to live to see the new year.

Something in your post (possibly a server hosting a picture) is causing loading of the thread to hang.

How brilliant of President Bush to tell them that we have the names of ALL the military leaders of the Republican Guard. Nice to see the rats both here and abroad scurrying for cover.

I don't know what that top picture you have is but for us on dial ups it sure doesn't help the loading of the threads you keep posting it to.

I am getting very annoyed at the long download time for these fund raiser photo links. If you must advertise, can't you do it in a less obtrusive method?

"We have been getting approaches for the past two or three months, but the trend is increasing. Those contacting us come from Saddam's inner circle."
All it would take would be one of his top people training a rifle on him and the ballgame would be over. That would make things a little easier on all partys involved.

And I betcha the Iraqi Generals are frisked before staff meetings with Saddam..

These guys are blowhards. I remember after Gulf War I they claimed that they had all these friends in Saddam's inner circle ready to revolt. It didn't happen.
There will be some runners once we start bombing, but only when the cause is hopeless will there be a mass exodus. Iraq lost the Gulf War badly. We don't talk about it much, but we killed 10's of thousands of Iraqi soldiers. When the bombs start flying over Republican Guard headquarters in Bagdad, then we will see some anti Saddam converts.
