(Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) released the following statement on September 30, 2002, one week after he traveled to New Jersey to campaign for Sen. Torricelli's re-election.)
"I respect Senator Torricelli's decision to end his campaign for re-election. He has been a valuable member of our caucus and an untiring fighter for the families of New Jersey. His articulate leadership on foreign policy, education and the environment and his determination to lower taxes for middle-class families made him a leader in the Senate, and his efforts as DSCC chairman in 2000 were critical to a electing a Democratic Senate majority to fight for those issues with him. I know this was a very difficult decision for him and his voice will be missed.
"The outcome of this race is vitally important to the people of New Jersey and will play a critical role in determining whether Democrats maintain control of the U.S. Senate. I am confident the voters of New Jersey will focus on the future and the high stakes involved in this race and I look forward to a vigorous debate on the issues facing them."

Tom knows because the Torch told all the Dems what he'd done for them in his speech on Monday.
