An explosion outside a bar frequented by troops from a nearby base killed an American soldier and a Filipino and wounded at least 14 people Wednesday night in the southern Philippines.
The blast went off just a few yards from a camp where U.S. troops have been staying while supporting a humanitarian mission on nearby Basilan island. The Americans stayed behind after a six-month U.S. counterterrorism mission, aimed at helping local troops battle the Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group, wrapped up in July.
