I just want everybody to know....
VANITY | ME

Posted on 10/01/2002 8:54:14 PM PDT by rodeocowboy

I don't usually post. Mostly, I just reply to articles that are already posted. But, I just want everybody to know that I just watched a movie that makes "Saving Private Ryan" look like a class B movie.

The movie I am talking about is called, "We Were Soldiers." It is absolutely the most patriotic, best war movie I have ever seen. And, above all, it is a true story.

Well, that is my vanity post for a lifetime. Get the movie and watch it. I promise, you will not regret it.

Yes, a truly great movie. Mel gets my vote as the coolest guy on the block. He knows what's what.

I just bought the DVD for my husband, tonight at Costco. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the movie. Might I recommend that you read the WSJ/Opinion Journal editorial from Monday. It includes some interesting history of the war in Vietnam. The Democrats Refight Vietnam

I saw both flicks. We Were Soldiers is a good movie and you're right, it's much more patriotic. But Private Ryan is a much better film. I know I'm gonna get slammed for it, oh well.

The guy who wrote the history article was a bit off and superficial in many places. For instance, the geneva accords did not exactly divide the country. The Country was already divided and had been for many centuries. The area referred to as Viet Nam was originally three nations, Cochin-Chinan in the south, An Nam in the middle, and Ton Kin in the North. That's where the name Tonkin Gulf came from. Ho Chi Minh controlled Tong Kin and he and his operatives mounted an offensive against the Southern areas.

Another thing the author doesn't mention is that the reason Minh hit the south a little earlier than he planned is because high level communists visited the south and concluded that economic improvement there was occuring at such a fast rate that leftist revolution would become impossible in several years leasing to a satisfaction that would make revolution impossible. The communist then determined to attack immediately through a guerila movement to disrupth the nation and its economy.

How odd. A dear friend of mine just called me the other day and said the very same thing. She insisted I rent the movie and said it is the best she had ever seen on Viet Nam. She is a Gulf War vet, with an older brother who served in Nam.

What did you think of the implication that Kennedy was killed as pay back for his involvement in the killing of Diem?

I do not know this personally, it was relayed to me by a co-worker who was there...the whole thing was a cluster-f***. The men were unpreppared during the landing and did not take the mission seriously. They were not paying attention when the attack was mounting and were caught out. It was by air power that the group was not completely wiped out by the Viet Cong. I am only relating the memories of a medic in country but he was very convincing. Perhaps there was some artistic license taken in this movie.

------------

It should have been that way, but I doubt that's the way it happened.

Also, one of the Sgts. wounded multiple times here was just awarded the Medal of Honor by Bush I think last year.

-------------------

The troops were inexperienced with the exception of Moore and the Sergeant Major. If you remember early in the movie Moore complained bitterly that his troops would be landed in small separate groups and protested the action. For practical purposes it was damned near a suicide mission. It was typical of the tactics employed during the McNamara peropd. If you study the movie carefully, the ground taken was never reinforced and held, but was relinquished to be retaken again and again utilizing the same tactics. It was one of the reasons we lost so many men in Viet Nam.
