Interesting web site: A collection of famous last words, farewells, and last stands
A collection of famous last words, farewells, epithets, and last stands ^ | NA | Kurt A. Sanftleben

Interesting web site. Records last words, deeds, and wills of both real and fictional people.

Here are some examples:

Archimedes of Syracuse  (298-212 B.C.) "Wait 'till I have finished my problem!"

Astor, John Jacob, IV (1864-1912) "The ladies have to go first. . . .  Get in the lifeboat, to please me. . . .  Good-bye, dearie.  I'll see you later."

Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827) "Friends applaud, the comedy is over."

Bell, Alexander Graham (1847-1922) "No."

Booth, John Wilkes (1839-1865) "Tell mother, tell mother, I died for my country. . . .  useless . . . useless . . ."

Nothing, in my opinion, can top French grammarian Dominique Bouhours' last words:
"I am about to — or I am going to — die; either expression is used."

I'm going to check the site and see if they include him.

Try it again tomorrow.

Here's a thought: Since my ISP has no such bandwidth limitation, if I find it worthwhile, I'll host it up on my server and post the link tomorrow. Provided I can get access.

AUGH! We bombed the guy's site past its data transfer allocation in the middle of my search! DagNABBIT! I was looking for my own favorite last words, and now I'm gonna have to put out my begging bowl...

To Civil War (aka the War of Southern Aggression) scholars - (oops - do I hear a few veins popping? Hee hee...) - OK, folks, you know the answer and I can't remember for the life of me - who was the Union General who, upon viewing his opposition at a prohibitive distance, grandly pronounced "Don't worry boys, they couldn't hit an elephant at that dist---" and was promptly shot dead...???

I thought Archimedes' last words, as invading soldiers advanced on him in his study where he was sketching shapes in the sand, were "Don't disturb my circles."

YES!! Thankyouthankyouthankyou...

In the good General's defense, it was supposedly one heckuva fine piece of marksmanship.
