THE leader of a far-Right group in the United States, which has adopted the Saltire as its emblem yesterday insisted the flag was merely a celebration of the Scottish ancestry of white Americans.
Dr Michael Hill, an historian who heads the League of the South, has been accused by US civil rights activists of running a white supremacist organisation behind a campaign for independence for the southern states from Washington.
The league has set up an Inner Circle of St Andrew for followers, symbolised by the Scottish national flag. Anti-racism campaigners have warned Scottish tourists visiting Florida that wearing the flag could associate them with the group. Dr Hill yesterday insisted his group was not racist and should be seen as a political group with aims similar to those of the Scottish National Party.
"We would like independence from Washington just as the Scottish would like independence from London," he said. "We mean no disrespect in using the flag. We love the flag because our confederate ancestors adopted it. Your heroes are our heroes, Wallace and Bruce."
The League of the South was set up in 1994 and has nearly 10,000 members who claim Celtic roots and advocate the "cultural dominance of the Anglo-Celtic people".
A report two years ago into the league by the Southern Poverty Law Centre, a civil rights campaigning body, said the group was "rife with white supremacists and racist ideology".
Dr Hill dismissed the report, saying the centre was a "far-left fundraising group" which regularly tarred its opponents with the accusation of racism. Dr Hill said the League of the South is a Christian organisation which is dedicated solely to campaigning for Southern independence and has no specific policies on race or morality.
However, he said many of the group had similar views on matters such as homosexuality. "I am sure if you asked the majority of our members they would say that it is wrong and disgusting, and I would agree with that. We are very suspicious of the idea of a modern, secular government that promotes abortion and sexual deviancy."
Dr Hill said the League favoured a choice of segregated and non-segregated schools.
" There has been state-enforced integration for 30 years. We believe in freedom of association. You cant have a private club that is segregated now and that is not freedom," he said.
Actually, they do.

I hope they don't let the Russian navy in on shore leave - their Andreevskiy flag has the same emblem.
Only because the "Anti-racism" campaigners are trying to tar the Scottish flag the same way they have tarred the Confederate flag.

SALTIRE BUMP!!!
Actually, they do.
I've never heard SPLC criticize any black group, not even the Black Panthers, the Nation of Islam, or Jamaican posses.
