no it was a ripoff of the Doomsday book.
I never read Doomsday Book, so the plot setup was novel to me. Maybe I'll pick that one up as well to compare.

Doomsday Book is by Connie Willis, if anyone wants to locate it, and is one of the best novels I've ever read.
