Miss New Jersey's prejudiced question

Posted on 09/24/2002 6:49:26 PM PDT by max epr

Question: Is it true that, at the Miss America pageant, a question was asked of Miss New Jersey (Miss Lucia) about the Sopranos? No other Americans must put up with such insults. Since there's no one else to bash the dogs are unleashed against Americans of Italian without any hindrance. this site gleefully joins the chorus.

While you can point out secondary figures in a few movies in an attempt to show your behind, the overall pattern is clear.

Meyer Lansky was definitely NOT a secondary character in the movie about him. Also there was another movie starring Richard Dreyfus which featured Jewish gangsters in the Montreal area.

(There was Hyman Roth in the Godfather movies too).

-------------------

The figure of Roth in the movie was very loosely based on the figure of Lansy. Lansky, of course was never killed. He was in association with Vinie Alo, the Chicago heads of the mob, and, and the labor unions. As alluded to in the movie, this coalition was going to set up a new Las Vegas in Cuba after which they would all go legit, which is what they wanted to be all along. Castro put the quietus on it.

I don't have any emotional stake in this one way or another. A jewish lady friend's father was one of the biggest bookmaker's in NYC. It was undoutedly somewhat affiliated with the outfit. I consider bookmaking to be a fine occupation. I have known some people on the Italian side that we don't talk about. Some of them were very pleasant people.

But the consistent dominent overall pattern is perfectly clear. If you want to deny it by reference to a few unrepresentative instances, it's your right to do so.

Unrepresentative? There are TONS of movies out there about Jewish gangsters including the epic "Once Upon A Time In America." There are a whole bunch of movies about Dutch Schultz alone. Okay, so maybe the "Godfather" movies didn't emphasize that so much but they were about the MAFIA. Don't you read the OTHER posts on this thread. They also pointed out these facts. If you want to deny reality, it's YOUR right to do so.

Hummm. Isn't it strange that the movie series was called The Godfather instead of the Rothfather? Italians were nearly exclusively portrayed as central figures throughout the series and Roth appeared only briefly in one part?

The Godfather was written by Mario Puzo. It was about the MAFIA. To be a member of the MAFIA you had to be 100% Sicilian. Or maybe you think Puzo should have added some PC diversity to his novel?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I'm Norwegian, and live in Minn-a-so-da.. After the movie, Fargo, we talked like that for weeks. Many of the people living in Fargo loved it. They got to review the movie in one of their auditoriums, and all dressed the part, talked funny like the movie, and had a ball.

I'm of Scottish descent, and it didn't bother me at all in Braveheart when they depicted the Scots mooning the English.

First off, I like the show the Soprano's, but they do play to sterotypes. They make Mafia folks look almost noble and imperfect, when in fact they victimize innocent people (ask the people who have to pay shake down money, or have to use certain contractors, or buy materials from certain people or get hurt for it, which is costs then passed on to us). This isn't the worst of it, some people (out of ignorancy) won't even hire italians. I've personally known stock brokers who think anyone italian knows somone, and thus, leaven them vulnerable to being pushed into something illegal. I wish they had more honest portrayls of people of different ehtnic backgrounds and ethnicities instead of so many god damn sterotypes.

You don't see movies or TV series centered on people such as Siegel, Buchalter, Cohen, etc. If there ever were an attempt at such a thing the Anti-defamation league would bring suit.

Siegel: Bugsy, The Virginia Hill Story, Lansky.

Buchalter: Lepke.

Cohen: L.A. Confidential.

I agree, HC!
I'm furious!
Every time I turn on the TV there's some C(rusty) O(ld) B(astard) acting like he could eat railroad ties and spit toothpicks!
Just once I'd like to see him pet a cat instead of kicking the crap out of it!
Heeheehee!
