LOS ANGELES FIRST CITY IN NATION TO VOTE TO BAN 50 CALIBER SNIPER RIFLES
WASHINGTON, DCThe Violence Policy Center (VPC) today applauded the Los Angeles City Council for passing a ban on the sale and possession of 50 caliber sniper rifles. This marks the first time that a legislative body has voted to ban these weapons of war. The groundbreaking measure was sponsored by Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas and passed unanimously.
The legislative effort, which received strong support from the LA Police Department, was spearheaded by the Violence Prevention Coalition of Greater Los Angeles, aided by the Pacific Center for Violence Prevention, and based on research by the Violence Policy Center (VPC).
With todays unanimous vote to ban 50 caliber sniper rifles, the City of Los Angeles has sent a very strong and clear message to California and the rest of the nation: We must bring these weapons of death and destruction under control, Tom Diaz, VPC senior policy analyst states.
The Council instructed the City Attorney to model the new measure regulating 50 caliber sniper weapons on the city ordinance restricting the sale and possession of assault weapons. The VPC was the first organization in the country to alert the American public to the dangers of 50 caliber sniper rifles on the civilian market with its landmark 1999 study, One Shot, One Kill: Civilian Sales of Military Sniper Rifles.
The 50 caliber sniper rifle is an extremely powerful weapon which uses high-caliber ammunition at distances averaging between 400 and 1,700 yards. These same military armamentsdesigned and sold for the express purpose of killing people and disabling key command and control outpostsare now freely available across America's gun shop counters. As a result, this ideal tool for assassination and destruction is now easily accessible to terrorists, criminals, and the mentally unstable. The VPC continued to warn lawmakers and the public of the dangers of 50 calibers in its 2001 study Voting from the Rooftops: How the Gun Industry Armed Osama bin Laden, Other Foreign and Domestic Terrorists, and Common Criminals with 50 Caliber Sniper Rifles, which explains the enormous range of 50 caliber sniper rifles, the explosive power of special armor- piercing and armor-piercing incendiary ammunition easily available in the United States, and why this war-fighting power in the hands of Al Qaeda and other terrorists creates a grave threat to all Americans. The study also details: how 50 caliber sniper rifles can create disaster at industrial facilities handling explosive, toxic, or volatile chemicalsthe kind of threat terrorism analysts already warn transforms a target into a weapon; a report for the Air Force which warns that 50 caliber sniper rifles endanger aircraft, bulk fuel tanks, fuel trucks, and other airport targets; and, the rash of 50 caliber sniper rifles found in the arsenals of domestic terrorist and extremist groups, including one that plotted to kill a state governor, U.S. Senator, and federal judges. We have made extensive research available to Attorney General John Ashcroft, the FBI, and key officials throughout the U.S., Diaz adds. We call on them to support the pending legislation sponsored by U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein and Congressman Henry Waxman. *** To obtain a copy of any of the VPC 50 caliber studies please call Naomi Seligman at 202.822.8200 X105 or visit the VPC website at www.vpc.org. Netscape 7, hmmm? I'm running Internet Exploder 5.5 on a Win NT 4 box, and all is well there.
I believe .300 win mag is the "ideal" sniper caliber. And that is the point, next will be all other sniper calibers, .308, 338 Lapua, .30-06, .223. Then they can go to all military calibers 9mm Parabelum, 7.62X39, .30-40 Craig, 45-70 GOVERNMENT...ect. Incrementalism trying to get a foothold.
God damn him and all his ilk.
Elmer Keith was the father of the .44 Magnum, as you no doubt know. I was all of fifteen at the time (1955) but remember the big deal made of the gun and cartridge. Actually, I became interested in big-bore revolvers through the .44 Magnum, bought the first one I could find. I got the "Keith" bullet mould and started casting his semi-wad cutter plain-base 250 grain bullet.
The .44 Magnum is no longer the most powerful production handgun ctg. but it's very accurate and works great for pretty much anything one wants to hunt in N. America. Load it down in power just slightly and the gun becomes almost tame.
Well, enough about Elmer Keith. This thread is on the .50 cal. Don't own one but would like to.
Oh, they know full well that .50 cals aren't used for assassinations, despite what they may say. It's all about banning firearms that could be used effectively against police or national guard vehicles (armored or otherwise).
Should we send cash and supplies to Kalifornian residents in the hopw that they'll rid themsleves of this oppressive regime?
Of course, Kalifornains will continue to crap in their own nest then move to other parts of the country which they will undoubtedly liberalize and ruin as they did in Denver.
I think "MOLON LABE" is a Greek expression, spelled mu omega lamba omega nu lamda alpha beta epsilon; in the symbol font the poster used (which is on my machine, if not yours) most of the Greek leters correspond to their translated equivalents except that omega is located under "W". Perhaps the person was writing it that way to be cute, but if that is the correct spelling of the Greek expression I can't particularly fault someone for spelling it correctly (with omegas rather than omicrons, if that's how it's spelled).
Is that a .303 SMLE?
