It would also lessen excitement for the campaign itself.

Primaries can be very important to the future of a campaign. You can die in the primary.

Well, I would need to know more. For instance, if the GOP has a contested primary with a lot of interest, their winning candidate could potentially pull in more votes than the winning Dem. But the Dem could still win in a cakewalk during the general election.
