Drugs & Violence: Bringing It Home

More kids use marijuana than any other illicit drug by far. Many of them are in search of the "natural high" their friends promised and think that marijuana use is only "harmless fun." They don't realize that the purchase and use of this illicit drug can have negative consequences that can trigger acts of terrible violence close to home, shattering lives and affecting communities-even touching the lives of people around the world.

Teens often believe marijuana use won't hurt anyone else. Sometimes though, it makes people violent. Kids who use marijuana weekly are four times more likely to engage in violent behavior than those who don't.

Americans spend billions of dollars on drugs every year. According to "What America's Users Spend on Illegal Drugs," Americans spent approximately $10.5 billion on marijuana alone in 2000. The bottom line is clear: Marijuana trafficking and use is a big, often violent business. Help the kids you know make the connection between this risky drug and acts of violence committed against innocent people where you live and around the world.

Do you understand the link between drug money and "terrible things"? Money from a drug transaction on a local street corner can end up in the hands of groups that commit violent crimes to support the drug trade. New advertisements, "Dan" and "Stacey," show viewers how money from a simple drug transaction can lead to crime and violence around the world. View the ads or read true stories of cases showing how drugs and money fueled crime and violence.

Has anyone seen both of these ads? I saw the "Stacey" ad tonight and I still don't believe it. The ONDCP continues to waste taxpayer money trying to convince citizens of a connection between drugs and violence/terrorism. Watch the "Stacey" ad when you get a chance, and see if you can't think of a rather simple solution to the bogeyman of dimebag related violence.

Uhm, there IS a connection between drugs and terrorism. While true that if drugs were not illegal they would not be the source of funds they currently are, that debate has been had and then some, and I for one will not rehash it. I advocate decriminalisation of use, and mandetory execution of convicted traffickers.

Your solution won't fix the problem. The only way to put the gangs out of business is to make it legal to sell so that regular businesses can do it. If you keep it illegal to sell, you keep all the bad effects going. Do you really want that?

Or better yet, turn all the illegal drug distributers into the Feds by phone
They bust the distributers and take their property as well to finance future busts.

More calling in of the illegal drug misfits would be a great answer. Thanks!

It must be a really great family situation if the kids can get smashed every week. No chance of domestic violence in a home like that ... no siree.

This may be true, although it would be interesting to see how they generated the statistic. But the key word here is kids. Kids shouldn't be smoking pot every week any more than they should be knock back a 5th of Jack Daniels every week. And I suspect that kids that do knock back a 5th of Jack every week are also more likely to engage in violent behavior than those that don't.

Unfortunately, since pot is illegal, it is easier for them to get it than it is to get hard liquor at the store (at least it is in my state.)

Can't they find a less obnoxious way of blaming booze problems on something else and making booze seem much better than it really is?

What is the point of this straw man? First, nobody of good conscience advocates the use of drugs by anyone other than adults. Second, the point is if Stacey could grow her own pot she wouldn't be dealing with scumbags. Finally, I have never met a pot dealer with a gun or any kind of inclination toward violence. Where do these predatory, gang-banging, ho-slappin marijuana peddlers live anyway? The lies are wearing thin.

It practically seems they are all but begging everyone to stop them. The paycheck keeps them from spelling it out, so they ratchet up the hyperbole instead.

Perhaps it would have been much more honest if they hadn't used child proxies to read their confessions during superbowl spots.

Great idea, that makes you an accomplice to the grand theft perpetrated under the guise of civil forfeiture. It amazes me that people who claim to be conservative and who say that they support the constitution would help the police steal from people with the obviously unconstitutional forfeiture laws.

No, it stops the cancer of illegal drug use on this nation and it's soul. A great patriotic move!

Really. Success is surely right around the corner. I mean surely the day will come when we all wake up and human beings are completely cured of the desire to be intoxicated.

And to achieve that end, you will trash the constitution and doom your decendents to a police state that will last multiple generations and will cost hundreds of millions of deaths until it is overcome.

Bad trade!

To be fair, my dealer drives an SUV. I guess that might make him a bad person.
