NAPLES, Florida (CNN) --The Georgia woman who prompted Friday's terror scare was "flat-out lying" when she told authorities she overheard three Muslim men at a restaurant laughing about September 11 and making suspicious comments, one of the men said late Friday.

Be wary of so-called meadia 'facts'. If you look back at earlier threads and commentaries, you will see that a lot of freepers where basing a lot of their arguments on 'facts' that later turned out to be 'mistakes' or 'misunderstandings' that the media reported.

As someone else has pointed out, some here will be believing the initial reports 10 years from now.

99% of people have tiny little attention spans. And besides, if the truth doesn't fit well with their preconceptions, it's always real easy to keep believing any illusion handed them.....

There are people who want facts (very few).
There are a large number of people who are basically emotional robots, who live from fear/anger crisis to fear/anger crisis having their buttons pushed.

And then there are those who care nothing for the facts, are aware of how to push the sheeps buttons and have agendas......

I watched Eunice today being interviewed for quite some time. She was quite credible, not a nosy racist old biddy.

She repeated her account to the letter each of the four times she was asked to repeat it. She also said she wasn't the type of person who would call the police for some thing she didn't really believe to be true. Her son said to her a few times, "Oh come on mom, they're just playing you."

Now I believe her son was right. These cretins saw her looking at them in a way they didn't like, so they thought they'd have a little fun. Their kind of fun.

These days you just don't say stupid crap like that, joking or to mock someone you think is "looking" at you funny. These three are very young, in their 20's and I imagine a quite cocky bunch. Not to mention they probably think they're hot snot because they're medical students. Albeit medical students from some school in the Dominican Republic, which just shows what kind of personalities we're dealing with.

They got caught lying and they are at least smart enough to understand how much money they cost the State of FL for their little prank, so they're going to let the little old racist biddy from GA take the fall.

Oh and one more thing. I'm quite pleased with the way the authorities handled this sitution. Had they been real terrorists on their way to do harm to say... your family, you'd be very pleased right about now.

This thread is really depressing me. So many people are flying off the handle, ready to attack any Muslim on sight. I have nothing but contempt for Islam, but I don't countenance terrorizing innocent Americans, whatever their national origin, just because we are jittery about the coming conflict with Islamic fundamentalism. The fever running through this thread is disappointing to me. FR is beginning to look like the typical political news group where people beat their chests, looking for an argument in order to release their personal hostility against a straw man enemy of their own imaginations.

There is enough anxiety over this issue without our having to descend into lynch-mob hysteria. Some of you scare me.

Well, if anything this thread proves that most of what I heard yesterday was twisted beyond recognition. Who knows at what point the facts got so screwed up. The jury's still out on this one before I make up my mind completely.

We have a woman who seems calm collected and credible, three "swarthy guys" who played some part in a alledged terrorist threat and mindless blither being reported by a clueless media (go figure!)

At any rate about half of what I heard being presented as "facts" yesterday seem to be refuted in this thread. At this point all I can say is this is becomming a hell of a lot more interesting.

If Eunice did hear what she said, then she 100% did the right thing. If I were pulled over by the police, I doubt I'd be inclined to submit to an unreasonable search myself. Still, the fact of the matter is that cultural traits and the current environment tend to make me believe Eunice. It's just the way it is today and anyone with a marginal sense of survival would probably be inclined to agree. The whole situation bear more scrutiny before we arrive at any further conclusions.

I'm sorry about the civil liberties of these men. At the same time, however marginal, the fit the profile of an enemy combatant. Right now that profile equates "Any Muslim male between 10-60." It's just the facts of life since 9/11. I might sound harsh but then yes, I'd round up half the Democratic Party as enemy combatants if I could. If you lived down here during the Election Recount of 2000, you'd probably feel the same way.

This article and your observation promted me for a thought on my family. During WWI there was a tremendous anti-German "wave" that swept the country. Since my GGF and GGM were from Germany, this social backlash forced them and the rest of the family to "de-Germanize" quickly. This had great benefits in integrating the family into America, so that by the 2nd generation, the family had become doctors, engineers, Army officers, business owners, etc., and (importantly) respected citizens of the United States! I can't help thinking that we have gone wrong with this hypenated American stuff. This guy who was born here should be on his way to making his "Arabness" disapear so that his children can be successful and main-stream.

One of the men said they told the police that no they did not want their car searched. Sorry but if that is not being cooperative then arrest us all. I would not agree to that either. Why would you? If you have nothing to hide? Let's not go there...

I don't believe the men should be persecuted for not wanting their car searched. However, I would not mind having my car searched, ever. There is simply nothing there and I would consent in a skinny minute in any police jurisdiction in the U.S. I would do this because I have never been in trouble and have a good reputation.

However, if I were a minority or had been in previous trouble my decision might be different.

Is the conflict you refer to the fact that I think the incident is being over-reacted to, but I want to see radical islamism destroyed? This brouhaha, at this point, seems to me to portend a nasty future for innocent American Muslims. This country cannot afford to devolve into mood of lawlessness whereby some of our citizens must live in a state of fear. By now, after internment of Japanese descendants during WWII, we should recognize the re-emergence of these passions. We need to defend ourselves from attack by the bad guys, but not all Muslims are bad guys. This should be obvious to a people dedicated to the preservation of individual rights. We must fight this war, but we must it fight with honor.
