Teens arrested after lighting American flag on fire

9/11/02 11:18 PM
Ann Arbor, Mich. (AP) -- Two teenagers were arrested Wednesday night after allegedly setting an American flag on fire at the University of Michigan.
Police said the boys, ages 15 and 16, ignited the flag around 6:30 p.m. near the school's Hill Auditorium. They then ran away.
The teens were arrested when they returned to the scene.
"The crime was setting a fire on campus," said Diane Brown, a spokeswoman for the university's public safety department. "What was set on fire happened to be an American flag."
Brown stressed that the teens were not Michigan students and were not affiliated with the university.
"They were just walking around looking for trouble," she said.
Police quickly extinguished the fire.
Brown said more people may have been involved and the case will be turned over to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office. The boys' names were not immediately released and Brown said she wasn't sure of their hometown.

Hmmmm. . . What
is going on in my old home town? Things have changed since I left in the 1970s if they actually
arrested someone for burning a flag. (Guess one of the reasons that I left.)
Oh, I get it -- it was because the kids were polluting!

...does the bimbo Brown's words say it all, or what.

Whose flag was it? Dunno. Probably one set up in front of Hill Auditorium. Not the kids', would be my bet. Typical juvinile vandalism -- like scrawing swastikas on a synogogue, or smearing excrement on a door handle in the school cafeteria.
Looks like they picked the wrong medium for expressing themselves, to me.

"Ancient and Unteachable, abide--abide the Trumpets!
Once again the Trumpets, for the shuddering ground-swell brings
Clamour over ocean of the harsh, pursuing Trumpets--
Trumpets of the Vanguard that have sworn no truce with Kings!
All we have of freedom, all we use or know--
This our fathers bought for us long and long ago.
Ancient Right unnoticed as the breath we draw--
Leave to live by no man's leave, underneath the Law." Excellent profile page, mi amigo...MUD

Why is it a crime to desecrate a religious image or site, but O.K. to desecrate an American symbol like our flag?
Can anybody explain that to me????

curious thing to do given the significance of yesterdays date...could almost lead one to speculate on the ethnic origins of these fine upstanding perpetrators.
as they are minors, presumably this information will not be released to the general public?

This happened in Ann Arbor. The perps could just as easily have pink skin, blond hair, and blue eyes or be hispanic or black as be of Middle-Eastern origins. Trust me on that one. I grew up in that town and pinheaded jerks come in all ethnic flavors.

Teens! Walking around, saw all the flags flying for 9-11. One was convienient to take. Hey! Lets set the school on fire. Happens more than you realize.
I live between 2 schools. Middle school 2 blocks away. You would be shocked at the things kids do after school.

"The crime was setting a fire on campus," said Diane Brown, a spokeswoman for the university's public safety department. "What was set on fire happened to be an American flag." Since I doubt the little bastards actually bought and paid for the flag they burned, an additional charge can be theft and destruction of university property.

Neither is OK if it's not your property. However, if it's your flag, religious image, etc. you can destroy it as you please if you don't harm anyone while doing so.
If you make an idiot out of yourself while burning a flag or defecating on a religious image is your problem. No one can be arrested because of stupidity.
