OTTAWA -- Leave your bow and arrow with your stowed baggage if you're travelling by air. Your box cutters, billy clubs and brass knuckles will have to stay behind as well.
Transport Canada has published a list of objects not permitted in carry-on luggage.
It includes the obvious -- automatic weapons, stun guns, hand grenades -- and the not-so-obvious, such as whips, scuba tanks and lacrosse sticks.
Don't try to sneak any catapults, fire extinguishers or spear guns onto an airplane. Authorities also frown on acids, tear gas, swords and meat cleavers.
Fireworks aren't a good idea, says Transport Canada, and ski poles, slingshots and crowbars are likewise no-nos.
The list of more than 100 items is by no means exhaustive, Transport Canada warns, and authorities reserve the right to seize any objects they deem dangerous.
Here are some of the banned items:
axes and hatchets (unless part of aircraft equipment);
billiard cues;
bows and arrows;
box cutters;
brass knuckles;
corkscrews (except those to be used by crew members);
darts;
hockey sticks;
ice skates;
lacrosse sticks;
liquids marked as flammable;
paint;
pyrotechnics (such as fireworks, road flares, flare pistol cartridges and starter pistol cartridges);
scuba tanks;
sports racquets (such as for tennis, squash and racquetball);
ski poles;
slingshots and catapults;
sporting bats (such as baseball bats and cricket bats);
tools (such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, drills, saws, crowbars and heavy tools, except those to be used for aircraft or aerodrome maintenance);
toy weapons.
A complete list of dangerous items can be found at www.tc.gc.ca
I can understand this one. If you saw "Cast Away", you know the impact that an ice skate had in the field of dentistry. (shudder)
hehehe. Some years ago I had a weird experience at a small European airport. I had one of these cooler things with me, and the cover lock broke. So I trundled up to some airline person and asked if they happened to have any strong tape lying around. Sure enough, he handed me a roll of tape and asked me to just come back with it when I was done with it.
Imagine. A whole roll of yellow tape, with the text : Pre-Checked Luggage/Airport Security. Of course, I doubt that would happen today.
