The Chronicle in an editorial today, moans the woeful state of our schools education. In a ground breaking editorial in Sunday's paper. The Chron notes the following;
There is an income gap, it claims that middle class neighborhoods score better than poor neighborhoods.
It also states that the more years a child is in the public school the larger the disparity in test scores between middle class and poor students. That's a politically correct way of saying, they get dumber.
They then to proceed to undercut their entire argument by pointing out that there are major disparities within schools and school districts, even amongst the poor and the middle class. They cite Berkeley High to show that even from the same community, blacks fare worse than whites.
Finally, they acknowledge that billions of dollars poured in this rathole of public education reform programs (that's just the programs) has had a negligible effect over the past several decades.
The solution is riveting:
Conquer poverty. How? Don’t hold your breath for a Nobel Prize winning response. Don't laugh. Here's what the Chron offered as the solution to the failing schools:
"That means putting more resources into health care, job training and housing. It may also mean resurrecting proposals such as the one made by Al Gore during his failed presidential campaign for universal preschool for every 4-year-old."
They also suggest another test, you're going to love this one:
" Just as the state annually assigns every school an 'Academic Performance Index',why not publish a Poverty Performance Index as well?"
That's right the solution to education woes is a) To make everyone rich and then b) to track the correlation between their investment portfolios and their test scores. Voila! You've got it. By golly, I think the Chron is on to something here!
The morons at the Chron really do have quite a solution there. No one ever even suggested in any study that either that the lack of upscale housing or upscale health care: a) caused poor test scores b) No correlation. And never mind the fact that there was never any evidence in the record that the poor didn't have adequate access to health care in California. Yet, this kind of illogical thinking didn't prevent the Chron to come up with a hypothesis and a conclusion with no facts in evidence. But failing students have nothing to fear. I guess these underachieving students can always find a job writing editorials at the Chron. They obviously qualify for that, and for this proposition, the facts are clearly in evidence.

Why don't the schools try to improve their students instead of dumbing them down to the level of the most ignorant?

This should come as no surprise since California public schools do very well against their counterparts in rural Mexico. This positive is a point for liberals to recognize with pride.
California does do a good job educating Mexico's poor in comparison to the education these Mexican citizens would receive in their native states along the US-Mexican border.

No thanks, Prince Albert. By the time I was 4, I was reading - thanks to older brothers who taught me, not preschool. All the preschool in the world isn't going to help children who come from homes where education is not important. I learned that when I was working with first and second grade girls at church. Those from welfare-recipient families, where the parent didn't care whether the kids got up in time for school or not, did poorly and couldn't read - irrespective of all the government-funded preschool and other free programs the kids had attend.
I didn't hear this, only that class size reduction, thanks to that idiot Jack O'Connell (NEA stooge) resulted in a horde of uncredentialed teachers flooding the schools because there weren't enough credentialed ones.
What's the story on the negative impact on poor schools?
I just don't understand why this story keeps coming back time after time after time.
Last night, I was wondering to myself about other words in this category. The one that immediately popped into my mind is the bartender's measure called a jigger (a 1 1/2 ounce measure). I guess all bartenders are racist, too.
