AMMAN: A Jordanian father who suspected his daughter of having sex before marriage promised police he wouldn't harm her then shot her dead.
An autopsy later revealed the 17-year-old girl was still a virgin.
Police here in the Jordanian capital detained her to protect her from family members who believed she was having sex.
The girl, whose name has not been released, was handed over to her father after he signed a declaration promising not to harm her. But he shot her dead soon after.
The girl's death was the third "honour" killing in Jordan in the past week.
The older brother of a woman identified only as Ghazaleh, 28, stabbed her to death with a hatchet and knife in her Amman home. A report in The Jordan Times said the brother turned himself in to police, admitting he had committed the crime to redeem his family's honour.
He complained he could not tolerate rumours spread by friends and neighbours about his sister's sexual relations.
A third victim, Suwad Mahmoud, 24, was strangled by her 20-year-old brother with a telephone cord after her family learned she was pregnant before marrying her husband.
The victim's family celebrated her killing by offering sweets to friends and neighbours. Police later arrested the brother, whose name was not made public.
The latest killings follow a Jordanian cabinet ruling last December to exempt those accused of "honour" killings from heavy sentences such as death.
Honour crimes include the killing of a female relative "caught in the act of adultery" or even in a situation deemed "immoral".
The amendment dropped the concept that such killings could be justified, but lawyers and women's groups said it was unlikely to lower the number.
The Jordan Times said 11 women had been killed in such crimes so far this year.
According to official figures, an average of 20 women are killed in "honour crimes" every year in Jordan.
Where is the mainstream press on stories like this?
Where is the U.N. and where are all these human rights groups?
I understand that all Muslims aren't like this, but how could the Jordanian Cabinet agree to lesser punishment for these murders?
It's this kind of commitment, no matter how mis-guided, that shows how far some Muslims may go with their Jihad against America!
Now there are reports of increased chatter in terrorist circles. Information is leaning towards a possible action against us over seas.
Some people may ask why we are reporting "chatter", but these are the same people who claim that we weren't told enough before 9/11!
When those countries involved show the rest of us that they will not tolerate and condone, through official inaction, such killings ,only then can we seriously welcome them to the world community.
Hate of all non-believers (infidels) was the basis for conquering and power was the goal. The school system was (and is in many cases) the main force of the continuing hate toward non-believers. The excuse that it is our policies which activated the jihad is just a statement to deny the ackowledgement of the teaching of this "hate".
Usama has set himself up as a second Mohammed with visions of grandeur.
Usama's patterns and methods are the same.
But my faith tells me that good will conquer evil and as always children (our children) will lead the way because we will do everything we can to protect them from evil.
We can see the wisdom of our forefathers in affording us the right to practice the religion of our choice and the tolerance of atheists in our midst.
Of course, the atheist boldly pleads the absurdity that they established "atheism" with no tolerance for the religious to utter the word "God" in their presense.
Sac
He broke his word to maintain his "honour".
Must be time for another idiot to declare that the West must try to "understand" these prople.
Uneducated stupid women can't teach a child very well and a child learns most in the early years. Also polygamy makes it so the children have little exposure or time with a father or total family activities. Bin Laden was nothing but a big mama's boy.
Because this is a widespread practice with much support in the muslim world. That anybody who reads up on these incidents can only conclude that these are not isolated incidents. Fellow muslims often sympathize with the perpertrators. And muslim immigration into western societies often import these ideas and practices with them.
Maybe you should ask why so many people who share your religion are so radicalized?
Because your relligion is the only one I am aware of that is based on hate instead of love. Doesn't your koran preach killing of everyone that doesn't believe the same way you do?
Honor killings are an Arab tribal custom, not a Muslim religious tradition. S0me Palestinian Christian father did the same thing to his daughter a while back. The practice, common among poor, backward Arabs, transcends religious beliefs.
"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. "
- Winston Churchill
Why blame Israel for what is clearly Bush's fault?

Serious question: are Muslim men who have premarital sex also honormurdered?
So he murdered TWO people. his sister and his unborn niece or nephew. And they were MARRIED. There are no words to describe the evil of the virulent plague that is Islam.
Given Jordan's population, an equivalent number of women in the United States would be 1,020 "honor killings" per year!!! And this in one of the most "moderate" Muslim states.
