US Open Tennis: Womans Final Chat Thread
CBS ^ | 9/7/2002 | Jack Black

Posted on 09/07/2002 6:22:16 PM PDT by Jack Black

Anybody watching the US Open. I thought the opening was really moving. Aretha Franklin is a great singer and I really enjoyed the whole flag ceremony. It's a great event because its in NY city and the final is ALL AMERICAN, on both the Mens and Womens sides.

The whole event was a the antidote to the whole whining reparations rally in Washington a few weeks ago. The world is tuning it to watch Black excellence. Excellenct in tennis, excellence in singing with both Aretha and the Harlems Boys Choir. America loves excellence, a great attitude and hard work. Really, no one gives a damn if your Black if you can do the job and do it well.

The Marines were awesome. Our Marines. I am so proud every time I see them. How can you not be.

Our Flag! It always makes me happy to see it.

Anybody else watching this??

My wife is watching in the other room and will keep me posted.

Our Flag! It always makes me happy to see it.

I couldn't care less about tennis, but I agree wholeheartedly with that statement.

The Williams girls are great talents. It would be nice to see them, just once, play hard against one another. It always looks as if they'd rather be anywhere else in the world when they play each other.

So far it looks like they are both trying hard. I think it's getting to be a bit of a grudge match.

Hopefully it will be as exciting as the Agassi/Hewitt matchup earlier today.

That said, I'm betting the house on Williams tonight!

...

Took about 9 break point opportunities for Serena to break Venus. 4-3, Serena now serving...here's Venus' first opportunity to break...converts on the second break point. 4-all now

Did anyone notice what Martina said? I couldn't catch it all, but it sounded like an anti-American slam.

Pertaining to the Amelie Mauresmo-Venus Williams match, she said that the crowd didn't back the American as much as they should have, but rather cheer on the underdog because of the dominance of the Williams sisters. Something like that.

Yes, she said the fans should remember that the Williams are Americans and root for them. She said you would never go to France and see the French root for a US player over a French one.

She also said she felt it had nothing to do with race but rather with the utter dominance of the Williams sisters.

Venus had flashes of brillance but couldn't put her game together. She needs to get her serve straightened out. Maybe slow it down 10mph on the first. She seemed to play better from behind, so there is a emotional aspect to her game that is off I think.

Tomorrow is going to be awesome. Agassi vs. Sampras !!!

Lots more American flags! About 20 on the court.
"resiliancy of New York, Williams sisters have raised the bar of Womens Tennis"
$375,000 to Venus, the runner up.
$900,000 to Serena.

$900,000 can buy a lot of those "cat-suits" that hug Serena's finest curves. ;-)

"Really, no one gives a damn if your Black if you can do the job and do it well.
Not that that had anything to do with Spike Lee's sudden interest in tennis...

I've never been a fan of chick's tennis until the Williams Sisters came along. They've made the game exciting (and I'm not just talking about Serena's outfit), just as the men's game has gotten boring. I love Hewlett for his attitude, but his game is a bore.

Those cross-court backhands that Serena nailed are ungodly, and that Venus can still play serve and volley means that tennis is not yet dead.

Too bad Venus couldn't put up a better fight. It might seem that she did ok, and that she battled hard, but 2-0 don't do it. Entertaining, and enchanting, nevertheless.

Congratulations, Serena.
