Parrot saves flat by shrieking 'Fire'

A parrot saved its Russian owners' flat from being destroyed by fire when it raised the alarm.

The parrot shrieked "Fire" repeatedly until neighbours heard and called the fire brigade.

Firefighters arrived in time to save the apartment, in the Altai region.

The married couple who live in the flat had gone out and the woman had accidentally left her hair tongs on.

Russian online newspaper Utro said the tongs had overheated and a bedspread had begun smouldering.

The parrot smelt the smoke and started calling out for help.

Finally, a bird that accomplishes more than your average politician.

Great job, Polly!

After that bird post of yours yesterday I'd say this one deserves an honorary 'lone star' or something.

You know, you look at the size of a bird's head, and you realize that the brain in there can only be that big, and now we see from this story that that's all it takes to understand and say simple words.

That BadJoe thread about What's Wrong With FR has gone on for thousands of posts, but everyone has been overlooking the obvious: all those posts from what seem like bird brains might be from real birds.

You know, I sat and watched a cockatoo in New Orleans walk a fence and actually interact with people as they walked by. He laughed at them, talked to them, and even let them pet him. His owner was nearby, but he just stood there while the bird held the stage, bobbing his head up and down and flaring his wings out, eagle style.

Don't call these creatures "dumb animals" around me!

Animals have more intelligence than most folks realize.

Some years ago, I was taking a smoke break. Rain started. I saw some small chips of wood and plastic moving on the ground. Looking closer, I saw that they were being carried by fire ants. A couple of minutes more observation revealed that they were using these materials to roof over their mound.

It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Time to get a bird - I have NO sense of smell.

On second thought, the cats would just think I'd brought home a new snack!

Amazing what the prospect of becoming a fried chicken dinner will do to your cognitive abilities...

That's like the joke about the foul mouth parrot and the freezer.
