U.S. Senate Candidate Jim Talent announced he has accepted a debate request issued by the world's longest running program "Meet the Press." If Mrs. Carnahan also accepts, the debate will take place at the NBC Studios in Washington D.C. on Sunday, October 6, 2002.

Missouri is one of only a handful of states where there is a key U.S. Senate race that has not had a debate. Democrat incumbent Senator Tim Johnson and Republican challenger Congressman John Thune have debated three times in South Dakota. There have been three debates in Minnesota's Senate contest between Democrat incumbent Senator Paul Wellstone and Republican challenger Norm Coleman. And in Arkansas, Republican incumbent Senator Tim Hutchinson and Democrat challenger Mark Pryor debated last week.

From a previous article,

Carnahan spokesman Tony Wyche said she is trying to accommodate her legislative schedule with the demands of the campaign to accept as many invitations as practical.

"We are working through the list," Wyche said of the debate requests. "There have been like 50 that have come into the campaign. People understand that she is a senator and has many duties that she has to fulfill. We think there is a way to strike a balance."

Other Senators have found time to debate, why haven't you Senator Carnahan?

Right now the perception is that Carnahan is way over her head as a Senator. If she debates she will PROVE beyond doubt that she is unfit to serve.

Excellent. This should put pressure on the widder BIG TIME. Will she be up to it? If she declines, it will definitely put her in a defensive position.

Bump

The Carnahan (i.e. "Handlers at the DNC", "Tom Dashole") people seem really frightened about letting Jean outside a scripted setting.

I read in the KC star where because this is a special election, if Talent wins he could go right to working changing the make-up of the Senate and putting the Republicans back in the majority with the VP's vote, at least for a short period. But of course they went on to say OTB has to sign off on it, and he will most likely stall.

You've got that right, KC. Probably because they no SHE IS NOT CAPABLE OF WINNING A DEBATE!!! Especially against someone as intelligent and personable as Talent!!

None of this would have been necessary and the GOP would never have lost their majority in the first place had Ashcroft and Lott understood the USCon (Article I, Sections 3 and 5) does not allow a dead man to win election to the Senate.

Have to be watching for that one.
I would love to see Mr. Talent put the hurts, metaphorically speaking, on Mrs. Carnahan.
