This statement may be the first step toward taking back the seminaries from the homosexual subversives. The U.S. bishops had their chance to fix the real problem. Instead they created a purely retroactive "zero tolerance" proposal as ineffective as the current airline security screening system. Rather than just look for the "weapons", the Pope appears to be laying the groundwork for the real solution, profiling the terrorists long before they get to the airport.

"Rather than just look for the "weapons", the Pope appears to be laying the groundwork for the real solution, profiling the terrorists long before they get to the airport." The Pope understands what needed to be done. And he has done it.
Liberal howling and wailing to follow...

I am not a Catholic and do not fully agree with some of their ideas, but applaud the Pope for his stance.
I do hope that he was including homosexuals and not just pedophiles in his comments (I assume that he is).
I understand that the RCC is a big bureaucracy just like a gov't, so can understand the reason for the delay in his speaking out.

deviations in their affections The Pope answers to a higher power. It's refreshing to hear/see that someone in authority, when pushed to the edge, will finally make the right/moral decision. Not only will the liberals and homos scream bigotry and homophobe, but the pyschiatric associations will criticize the church for not being "with the times" even though 20 years ago their text books said the same thing.

I am happy and relieved to be reading these comments from the Pope. Cleansing and then healing is what is needed.

He said the Church had to be careful not to allow men who had what he said were obvious "deviations in their affections" from entering seminaries to train for the priesthood.

Boy is this ever going to raise hell. The system here is going to attempt not to comply with it.

It's about time. I'll really start to cheer when Protestant churches get the message too.
The Bible depicts deviancy as an evil in so many ways that the rationalizations I hear out of the seminary class are beyond belief (my extended family and friends include a good many Presbyterian theologians, church administrators, and ministers).
Who should take Christian churches seriously with that kind of rot in the centers of their intellectual integrity?
That this same group has conferred upon themselves the "elite" status (to protect their own from civil prosecution for violating children) warranted and clearly abetted the slow desertion we have seen in Christian churches in both Europe and America. It was that alienated status as a priestly class (as opposed to the honor of service to fellow sinners) which (to me) did the damage that made this tolerance for deviancy possible.
The Church will be vastly better for this, as long as they truly follow through. Time will tell.

I was listening to a Catholic writer and expert the other day, who had the best line ever: He said (paraphrasing)
Demanding that the church should allow priestly marriage to stop homosexuality is to define marriage as a "Prevention Program."

Where's Bill O'Rielly weighing in against the Pope on this?

About time.

...men with "deviations in their affections" Finally someone has said the "d" word. Men with deviations in their affections == "deviants". Let the wailing and gnashing of teeth begin. LOL!!

Thanks for the post.
You used the word "homosexual", CNN did not. The best they could come up with is, "sexual abuse of children". The real culprit is mature male priests sexually abusing young teen age boys. AKA as homosexuality. Given it is CNN I guess they did better than usual.

The Pope did not say "homosexuals" he said "obvious deviance in their affections. Now, the membership needs to ask why those words, what exactly do they mean and why not use the word for sodomite?

Pope John Paul II says that to preserve itself, the Roman Catholic Church has to be much more careful not to let men with "deviations in their affections" enter the priesthood. The correct descriptions, JP, are homosexuals and pedophiles. You have to be equally concerned about those deviants that are already in the priesthood and you need to make an unequivocal statement concerning getting them all out. Now. These tragically watered-down statements mean nothing.

The fact is, the Pope has NOT named homosexuals. His comments could easily be interpreted to mean those attracted to kids. It's clear to everyone that homosexuality is the problem, but American bishops are likely to interpret away the Pope's comments to suit their pro-homosexual ideologies. And it's not clear the Pople is actually going to do something to address the situation. After all, the Bishops were told not to ordain homosexuals in 1961 - big deal - nothing happened except to ordain a mintload of homosexuals.
