The Winter Garden, a 10-story vaulted aluminum-and-glass atrium, reopened Thursday, becoming the first major building destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks to come back to life.
Gov. George Pataki and Mayor Michael Bloomberg lauded workers for rebuilding the popular public space that was the centerpiece of the World Financial Center complex within the one-year deadline set by its owners.
"When you saw the magnitude of the devastation, this day seemed very distant," Pataki said. "The Winter Garden is a symbol of how New Yorkers are triumphing over this tragedy."
The reconstruction included replacing the metal framework and 2,000 panes of glass, bringing in 60,000 square feet of marble flooring and steps, and replacing 16 40-foot Florida palm trees...CLICK
