Man Arrested in Washington After Police Find 16 Guns in Car

WASHINGTON (AP) - Police Chief Charles Ramsey says a man arrested with 16 guns in his car about two miles from the White House may have made threats against President Bush.

The man was stopped a little after noon Wednesday after the Secret Service received information Tuesday suggesting a man was driving from Pennsylvania toward the White House with explosives.

The Secret Service issued an alert for police agencies to be on the lookout for him.

Washington police stopped a car registered in Pennsylvania and driven by Jeffrey Cloutier, 33, of Newport, N.H.

Authorities found 10 rifles and six handguns in the car, but Ramsey said no explosives were discovered.

Newport Police Chief David Hoyt said his department was alerted Tuesday night that Cloutier was headed to Washington, and officers notified the Secret Service based on that information.

The Secret Service declined to comment on whether Cloutier had made any threats toward the president, but a New Hampshire law enforcement source said Cloutier had talked of harming Bush.

"He said President Bush was doing a poor job, and he was going to take care of him and take over," said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Cloutier's grandmother told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that her grandson had been having problems recently and had sought treatment for epilepsy.

Cloutier was held for investigation of possessing unregistered firearms and ammunition. Cloutier's wife was also taken into custody, but a Secret Service source said she was unlikely to face any charges.

"a man arrested with 16 guns"

The police have told Dr. Kimball to stop looking for a man with one arm, instead look for this man's accomplice, a man with 16 arms.

The article is odd huh? The unsaid unnamed tip thought he had explosives? And I am not saying anything in defense of this guy ( I know nothing but what this evasively odd article says) but why 16 guns?

My thought, too. He may be unhinged -- local news in my hometown said the guy was actually "hunting" President Bush (their word -- but this is an "if bleeds/leads" station that tends to amp thundershowers into Velikovskian cataclysms).

Chances are he's new in town and didn't realize that DC has (unconstitutional) laws against possession of a firearm.

Weren't there warnings to be on the lookout for him, yet he made it all the way to DC?

I used to work for a guy who kept 12 guns in his trunk. The reason he kept guns in trunk is that they would be safer than in his home where they might be stolen.

"He said President Bush was doing a poor job, and he was going to take care of him and take over,"

Sounds like half the people here on FR on any given day.

I said it on the thread yesterday, I'll say it again--if Ramsey said they couldn't find explosives in the car, that means the car is probably stuffed with 'em. Get a PI in there and he'll find all the "go boom" stuff in short order.

Any mention of faded 'McCain for President' bumper stickers on the car?
