I like all kinds of music as long as it's interesting. Which the Rolling Stone aren't. Two days ago a friend offered me free tickets to the Stones' show at Comisky Park (they're playing 5 shows here in Chicago, all at different venues). I turned them down because they were too expensive. I last saw them when they were doing the "Voodoo Lounge" tour. The next day I decided I was going to listen to mostly classical from here on in. Bach doesn't fade and age...unlike Mick.
By the way, if you can, get tickets to see Thais at the Chicago Lyric Opera this winter - Renee Fleming is going to be in it and you don't want to miss that.

Is Eleventh Dream Day still active? I saw them at Lounge Ax years ago and was blown away.

I just got back from the Gearfest at Emo's in Austin, Texas and while it wasn't all that it could be (in crowd size or band list, bands like the Hellicopters and Dictators had been discussed but could not make it), there were still some very good sets:
The Lords of Altamont (featuring ex-Bomboras), the Lazy Cowgirls (who are getting more country Stones-ish with each album), a reunion show from the Rubber City Rebels, Sugar Shack (who are receiving some national radio airplay on the syndicated "Little Steven's Underground Garage), and more.
Stones fans looking for some modern rock and soul should consider seeing the Makers, the Detroit Cobras, or the Bellrays.
That said, the recent Stones tours have been an improvement over previous decades. They've cleaned up their act, they pull out the top albums (not just the top songs). Sure they peaked in 1972 with Exile on Main St. but Sticky Fingers still has some strong songs (as does Some Girls). The 1978 tour wasn't so hot. I don't know if 1983's tour had much to offer and neither did the Steel Wheels tour.
Bridges To Babylon was a better tour than Voodoo Lounge and now that they are doing song blocks from old albums (including Exile), it may not be bad to see them.
For the record, I'd have to put the 2 Sun Ra Arkestra concerts near the top of my "best shows" list (both years those concerts were surpassed by "reunion"/oldies shows: Brian Wilson singing the entire Pet Sounds album with the Wondermints and one of Bob Dylan's recent tours). Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's 1998 tour was their best and a memorable show for me.

Classical music (at $35-150) and opera (at $60-250) aren't cheap shows to see live either. And they receive federal tax dollars (from the NEA).
I'll catch it on occassion but it is too much of a high society enterprise for me. See and be seen.

I just got back from the Gearfest at Emo's in Austin, TexasDamn! I wanted to go to that (really)... I know Mike La Vella, who runs Gearhead mag/ Gearhead records in San Fran. He's an A&R genius, having signed the Hellacopters and the Vines before anybody had heard of them stateside.
By the way, did you catch Knuckel Drager? They were supposed to play Gearfest Austin; I know a couple of the band members.

I saw Mike but didn't talk to him (I did briefly at the Garageshock the previous year, which was much better). I did talk briefly with Michelle.
Tim Kerr is the producer for much of this type of music and I talked with him awhile (we've met a number of times and have common friends). For all he's done, he doesn't get the recognition that he is due.
I ended up only going to the first 2 days of the fest (too fatigued for any more). It was hot and the days were long (over 10 hours on my feet including the daytime gigs at Emo's and Sound Exchange).
Something similar coming up is the Las Vegas Shakedown next Valentine's Day (or the Wild Weekend in Europe in 2003).

Haven't heard of the LV shakedown, but I've been to Viva Las Vegas, the big psychobilly swingfest. Good times.
Speaking of Austin, I was there in April and caught Nashville Pussy and Reverend Horton Heat at Stubb's back yard. Great show; loud, evil, sleaziness under the trees. Also caught the Paladins at the Continental.

The Exile cuts were great. Despite being stigmatized as dinosaurs, these guys put on a great show.
As far as the arena rock syndrome, over the 90's, i've seen 'em up close from the expensive seats and from further back in the hall. Great either way.
Was a little surprised at the no encore, but hearing Love Train and the a great bluesy, jammy version of Can't you hear me knocking more than made up for that. Honky Tonk was done on previous tours but still a crowd pleaser.

Well, another "has been" Marianne Faithfull is playing a club venue in a couple of weeks here.
Sure tix are outrageously expensive for the Stones. But even so, they are rocking. The Babylon tour was great and it's a personal choice to drop that cash; but if you can see them in the small venue, check them out.

Who cares about these jerks who don't like the Stones.
NP can go shove it where the sun don't shine for all i care about his opinions and self centered 'journalism'.

Check out the new Stones "ReMastered" series. For the first time, mastering from the original master tapes. Although the outside package does not indicate, the new series are dual layer. One "standard" CD layer that is played on any CD player - best sound vs. older CD versions with the new remasterings. But a second layer is the new high-resolution Super Audio CD (SACD) but requires a SACD player to read. This layer sounds so great it has been comnpared to listening to the master tapes! HIGHLY recommended!!!!

I read that they are supposed to all be out now but the stores didn't order 22 titles at once so stock varies from store to store.
Those dual layer discs are supposed to be problematic for some DVD players. Also aren't SACDs normally more expensive? These discs appeared to be normal priced.
There are competing audio formats for the next generation of CD audio. It's good that they are providing it on the standard CD but the format war is not over yet.
I'm aware of an APEX DVD player that can handle both new CD audio formats but how common are such machines?
The way I've read it, to get every song/mix, you need to buy the following discs:
England's Newest Hitmakers
12X5
Now!
Out Of Our Heads (US)
December's Children
Aftermath (UK)
Between The Buttons (UK)
Got Live If You Want It
Satanic Majesties
Beggars Banquet
Let It Bleed
Ya-Yas
Metamorphosis
Hot Rocks
More Hot Rocks
Singles Collection (mono mixes & b-sides)
Flowers (2 songs)
Obviously, some of these purchases will provide many duplicate tracks and some are only different takes or stereo/mono differences.

I read this piece of crap Sunday. Apparently this guy Pollack is either too young to appreciate the Stones or just used to the schlock that the nineties has produced. Flaccid lighting? Maybe he should sign up for that ride in a space shuttle that was denied to Lance Bass if he really wants a lightshow......in my humble opinion.

Apparently this guy Pollack is either too young to appreciate the Stones.....Or maybe he just sees them for what they are, and old hippies are too stuck in a time warp to admit it.
Hmmm?

They are the best rhythm and blues band regardless of age, and space and time continuum.

I think more of their efforts are directed into Freakwater (a country band, if you're not familiar) now. I still see some activity out of Freakwater but haven't heard of EDD doing much of anything recently.
