Hafer crossing party lines to back Rendell for governor
Tuesday, September 03, 2002
By James O'Toole, Post-Gazette Politics Editor
State Treasurer Barbara Hafer, a Republican, will cross party lines to endorse Democrat Ed Rendell in his race for governor against GOP Attorney General Mike Fisher.
The surprise development will be showcased in Fisher's political back yard in a press conference tomorrow morning on the steps of the City-County Building in Downtown Pittsburgh.
Hafer and Rendell will then set out on a cross-state tour with stops in Harrisburg and Philadelphia later in the day. Hafer is to continue to campaign actively for Rendell.
One group that will be a particular target for Hafer would be Republicans who, like the treasurer, favor abortion rights. Hafer, a former Allegheny County commissioner, will also be a wedge to pry voters from Fisher in his geographic base. Before being elected attorney general, Fisher represented a state senate district based in the county's South Hills.
Neither campaign had any immediate comment on the decision by Hafer, who, until early this year, had been a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor. In the face of widespread support for Fisher among the state GOP establishment, she withdrew her candidacy, allowing Fisher to win the nomination unopposed.
More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
A VERY IMPORTANT message for the electorate that is rarely heard. Thousands upon thousands of 'pro-life Christians' are STILL voting for Democrats...43% of professed 'born again Christians' voted for Al Gore; a hard-core pro-death candidate. How do they reconcile these votes with their Christian values? If you claim the mantle of Christianity, you NEVER, but NEVER, vote for a pro-death (choice) candidate...Democrat OR Republican.
Exactly. Fisher should be peaking right when the spotlight starts to shine on the fall campaign. He's not.
Until I see evidence of a surge from polls or other sources, I'll stick with the idea that he's behind by double-digits. I reserve the right to revise and extend my remarks once a new poll comes out. He's gotten bad media lately-- add this to that fire-- and he's not looking like a winner when the voters take a look at him.
We had a pro-choice woman in Colo. a few years ago who was fairly senior in the legislative leadership. She lost a Senate race and jumped to the Dems, who ran her for Congress. The Dems thought legions of pro-choice Pubbies would turn out for her. They didn't and she lost.
Guess you're not seeing the news from MD.
But that's just it. You don't know if he's surging or not. Neither do I. I do, however, expect him to close the gap. Will he pass Rendell? I dunno. Will Gov. Schweiker and President Bush be able to help his campaign? I dunno.
I was glad to see that Fisher and Rendell are essentially considered even in the money department.
Sadly I have to agree with you
One guy (no offense, Stevio!) doesn't like Fisher's ads, and that's affirmation? LOL.
Fine. Then my yard sign survey showing Fisher leading 100-0% is now considered a scientific poll.
Both are on the ground and don't think Fisher is surging.
No I didn't say that .. What I said was that I wasn't impressed with the commerical
As for Fisher .. he may have a chance .. but many things play into this factor
Most of the State doesn't like Rendell .. another one is .. even though the Philly Police Union is backing Rendall .. most city police officers can't stand him
I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet
From what I saw, they both agreed that they weren't impressed with Fisher's ad(s). Whether that translates into a surge or not, I dunno.
I'm sorry, GSC. I have no choice but to revoke your "affirmation" status. :-p
