While Keiko the killer whale frolicked in a western Norwegian fjord Tuesday, a local whale expert warned that Keiko may not survive the winter. If he doesn't attach himself from humans soon, it may be best to destroy him, he said.
Niels Oeien of the Institute for Marine Reasearch in Bergen, who specializes in sea mammals, says Keiko may also represent a threat to Norway's major salmon breeding industry.
'Reports are coming in now that the killer whale is disturbing fish farms within the Skaalvik Fijord,' Oeien told Aftenposten Multimedia. 'If there are more such episodes, he should be destroyed.'
Oeien's remarks may be viewed as shocking and brutal by many, but Oeien claims he also has the 26 year old Keiko's best interests at heart.
'I think the entire Keiko story is more or less crazy,' he said. 'Millions have been used to tame him, in order to turn him into a movie star. Then millions more are used to try and make him wild again.
'Those who think that they are helping Keiko by setting him free are actually doing just the opposite,' Oeien said.
Oeien also said he doubts 'very much' that Keiko is capable of hunting enough food necessary to survive. 'Then it is better to destroy him now instead of letting him starve to death', he said.

If he chokes to death, he was meant to die.
If not, well, maybe that's a new use for 'whale experts'
If you or I obtained a wild wolf cub, and raised it in the house with the family, it would identify with people. The height of cruelty would be to abandon it in the wild. To a human-oriented - domesticated - pack animal, such "freedom" is a terrifying ordeal. The animal cannot hunt for itself, and will not be accepted as a member of a pack (or pod) by its own kind.
We changed this whale's behavior and made him dependent on us; either we let him stay with humans in a controlled environment OR we put him down now. To allow him to starve in the name of Nature is an abomination.
Oh PLEASE...........quit trying to insert REASON into all this....
After all, this is environmentalists you're talking about.
< /sarcasm >
What I don't understand is this: Why don't they just ask the Whale what they should do?
Shouldn't that be detach?
And the most telling proof of all was not even mentioned......His uncanny resemblance to Rosie O'Doughnut.
"We must destroy you... it's for the best... the good of society... and yourself... I make no sense..."
Well actually they didn't release him *there*.
the grand scheme was to re-integrate him with nature at Iceland, 'cos that was where they decided his tribe lived.
Nobody actually asked Keiko, and about a week or so ago, realizing he was in the clutches of a bunch of Animal Rights Activists, he slipped from their control, took a quick navigation check and headed direct for Norway at flank speed.
And stop calling him a welfare democrat. Entertainer is an honourable profession and he seems to have willingly chosen it. Let Willy work!
And no they didn't take all this into consideration.
That's a horrible thing to say about an adorable killer whale! Keiko is definitely better looking!
;-)
Your story reminds me of the supposed 'depressed polar bear' at the Denver Zoo a few years ago. Somewhere they found a polar bear shrink and he did an analysis. Seems the poor thing was just in need of a good bonk....HAHAHA!
