AZUSA, Calif., 7:52 a.m. PDT September 3, 2002 - A wildfire in the San Gabriel Mountains that forced people to flee campgrounds over the Labor Day weekend has grown to 14,429 acres, officials said Tuesday.

The blaze, which started Sunday afternoon about 30 miles northeast of Los Angeles, was 5 percent contained, said Linda Steinberg, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service. It was expected that the wildfire would be fully contained by Sept. 10, Steinberg said.

Dave has returned from the dentist, the lawyer's office setting up our trust, and I decided to play in the traffic after the first two visits.

I'm home safe and sound, and between various toddler proofing jobs, I'm on Free Republic. I ran my Power Drill so much this morning doing these projects, I had to recharge the battery as it was doa without a single watt or amp of power. That has never happened before. I sure love the new tungsten drill bits. They drill right through aluminum, other metals and wood really quick.

Ebuck, the final design looks great.

Both of you, check your freep mail for some good news.

I remember the Malibu fires. Sureal. I lived in Santa Monica in the late 60's and apartments didn't have air conditioning. The summer heat sent people to the beaches for relief. And sitting on the sand, looking north you could see those 300 foot flames in Malibu. And the pictures of all the horses and dogs who made it to the smokey Malibu oceanside. My supervisor's home was burned.

I am sending prayers too.

I was a kid in Malibu at the time of the '72 fire. It came within a half mile of the elementary school, where they kept us out in the playground before sending us home. Home was threatened too, more evacuations through the fire lines.

Ten years later that area burned all thr way through, including our old house.

Fire is a part of the landscape there.
