Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon has begun making an issue of Gov. Gray Davis' fund-raising tactics even as a statewide poll shows voters think the governor would do a better job of maintaining high ethical standards in government.
But if Simon's more aggressive line of rhetoric -- that Davis caters to those who give him campaign contributions -- is bringing faint hope to some GOP leaders, they also admit they are suffering from waning optimism that the Republican nominee has a chance to win the governorship.

Davis is still polling at only 42% ... people dont want to vote for him... Simon needs to build his base and grab the center.
I haven't been paying attention to anything the media has said about Simon, good or bad. All I've heard about Simon is what FReepers say the media says about him.
I've never read general interest daily newspapers. I haven't watched network TV news in 20 years, and I never watch local TV news. I have no idea who the varous anchors are. I get my news from talk radio, C-SPAN, and the net.
I just distrust anyone who lusts for elective office, GOP or Dem, unless I find a rare reason to believe otherwise. (But I don't go out of my way to investigate.) I assume the GOP liars and crooks are somewhat better than the Dem liars and crooks, but GOP politicos records are nothing to crow about. See how the size of govt has ballooned under a GOP Congress.
