Please help me breaking the wall! (China)
me ^ | 09/03/02 China time | me

Posted on 09/02/2002 11:37:19 AM PDT by Lake

I'm now in China and can't visited some of sites I used to browse from the US. I tried to use proxy servers to bypass the firewall, but didn't succeed. Looks like they are inspecting the strings within the requests and filtering all sites containing things they don't want people to see. Can anyone give me some ideas of how to break the wall? Thanks.

Perhaps it would be advantageous for an American Chinese person to set up a proxy web surfer, where actual requests for information are encoded by a special browser (used in China) and decoded at the destination site, then passed to the net, then passed back encoded again. One could use a set of thousands of IP addresses, constantly changing, and in-country list distribution with altered JPGs. The one good thing about bureaucracies is that they are slow and stuupid when compared to rebel engineers :)

This is the only "negative" sites I can visit from China. I guess it's because FR is in English and not very popular among average Chinese in China. CNN, VOA, CBS and almost all US political sites are blocked. My favorite search engine "google" is blocked, too. I fear that my online banking accounts might be blocked sooner or later. Do you know how I can break it?

Move to Taiwan or Japan.

Sorry, that's the best I can do.

Why are you in China?

There must be a similar search engine to google that caches everything but I don't know what it is.

No, they are not slow at all! They have the most intelligent engineers woking for them and the most sophiscated internet censor gear sold by the US firms.

Aren't you taking a potential "life changing" risk by trying to bypass China's security nazis?

It's impossible for me. My wife and child are in Taiwan, but they are going to move to China. They are not into politics so they don't care. Many Taiwanese websites are blocked, too.

I have left China for seven years and may not be able to figure out how much risk I might be taking, but I have to visit some of the websites in the US.

Perhaps asking someone in a private email to accomplish your task and email the results would do.

I'm sorry, I really am, but I can't help you. The State Department takes offense when private american citizens interfere with the internal workings of a foreign nation. Apparently, they own the franchise, and are VERY protective of it...

Sorry...

Well, if their engineers spent less time cooking, and more time engineering, they'd be doing a lot better technologically... ;0)
