DEFUNIAK SPRINGS -- Commissioners in the Florida Panhandle's Walton County have refused to haul down a Confederate battle flag from a Civil War memorial on the courthouse lawn.
The unanimous vote came Tuesday in response to a request by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
"We say that it's a flag of hatred," said Sabu Williams, an NAACP chapter leader. "Put it in a place of historical value, not in front of a place of justice."
Williams suggested putting it in a museum. He said any Confederate flag flown on public property is offensive to blacks.
Nelson Winbush, 73, the black grandson of a Confederate veteran, disagreed as he urged commissioners to keep the banner flying.
Winbush proudly displayed a slightly worn battle flag he said had lain across the coffin of his grandfather, Lewis Napoleon Winbush, who died in 1934. It represents history, not the degradation of his race, Winbush said.
"The war was not about slavery," he said.
The vote was the second defeat in as many months for Williams in the Florida Panhandle.
Last month, the city council in Crestview, about 30 miles west of DeFuniak Springs, refused to remove the battle flag from a memorial to William "Uncle Bill" Lundy. He was Florida's last surviving Civil War veteran and died in 1957.
Williams said he will seek help from the national NAACP for protests at both sites.
Phillip White, spokesman for Sons of Confederate Veterans, said the DeFuniak Springs flag is displayed in a proper manner as part of the memorial to those who fought and died in the Civil War.

I guess that they must have missed the last NAACP meeting... or could it be that the NAACP does NOT stand for all blacks... just the racist and ignorant ones...
I have an idea. Let's get rid of everything white. No more St. Andrews Cross, no more excellence in school, no more...what? And once we have gotten rid of everything white, what then? Let's concede to every demand the black leaders make. Give them everything they want. (I'm not really sure what that is.) But let society give them everything they want.
Once we do that let's evaluate where we are. I'm not sure where we would be. How can the mainstream give the black race any more than it has? Perhaps we consult with the race mongers such as JJ and Al. OK, whatever you want you get. Here it is on a silver platter. Think about it. What would happen?

Anyway, it would be nice to do it...just to spite the PC crowd.
The PC crowd also has made rude remarks about the Daughters of the American Revolution(I am a memeber of that group)calling it racist since it has few Black members, etc.
There is no pleasing the PC crowd when it comes to PRIDE IN YOUR HERITAGE...if, you happen to be white or in some cases, part-white.
That's it, actually. The NAACP stands more for communist whites and always has. Until it was 50 years old almost all its officers were white. Even today, almost all of its funding comes from wealthy white liberals. If such a backwards, ignorant outfit represents black Americans, then black Americans are doomed.
There's the essence of the NAACP in a nutshell. Booker T Washington insisted on using the phrase "pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps". He founded a college and set about urging his fellow former slaves to avail themselves of education and to create wealth for themselves by entering the capitalist system. That was the Southern philosophy. WEB Dubois, a freeborn native of Massachussetts, despised Dr.Washington and pushed the example of his own life as the way to success. Dubois had been sheltered, funded and shepherded through life by wealthy whites. He founded his NAACP and was the only black officer of the organization. That organization spurned the idea of working one's way to economic equality and embraced the ideals of litigating and agitating for legislation to entitle black people to government largesse. Later, Dubois renounced his citizenship and joined the CPUSA.
Dubois was the northeastern model. Washington was the Southern model. To this day, people who follow Washington's advice create wealth for their families while those who follow Dubois's advice doom their families to poverty and virtual enlsavement.
And blacks whining about our flag is offensive to southerners. Your point?
Nice to see some of these folks stepping up to expose those NAACP fools for the morons and bullies that they are.
Perhaps we should come up with awards for "hatemonger" of the year. I think all the contenders for the title would be black. Maybe a little notoriety for being what they claim to despise would shut them up for awhile. Doubtful though. They ain't got sense enough to realize how ugly they are; either that or they just don't care.
Who are the real haters? Here in South Carolina, there has to be an armed guard posted at the Confederate Soldiers Monument 24/7 to keep it from being vandalized, While just across the state house grounds, the African American Memorial goes unmolested.
