DETROIT -- A man tried to sell his 6-year-old daughter to customers of a near east side party store, according to Detroit police.
According to investigators, the unidentified suspect and the girl were riding on a moped when they pulled up to the Chene-Trombly market at Edsel Ford service drive and Mt. Elliott late Saturday night.
The man allegedly got off of the bike and tried to sell the girl to customers of the store. One customer told WDIV-TV in Detroit that the man wanted $50 for the girl and planned to use the money to buy alcohol, the station reported.
A customer told a worker in the store and he called police.
Other customers subdued the man until officers arrived. One man struck the suspect to prevent him from leaving, WDIV-TV reported, while others protected the girl from the growing, angry crowd.
But the witnesses left once officers arrived and police said that without their testimony to confirm the story, they cannot pursue charges.
The suspect was released because of a lack of evidence.
The girl's mother was away at school at the time and unaware of the incident, WDIV-TV reported.
Authorities have placed the girl in foster care.

Ah, the beauty of alcoholism. Or wait..you can only become addicted and do stupid things because of illegal drugs right? So it's not because this guy is a moron that he tried to sell his daughter. It's the alcohol's fault. We'd better ban it, quickly!

Ain't you supposed to be honeymoonin' or something?

Maybe this community is waking up. Clearly, they were appalled at this behavior, and took personal steps to intervene.
But when the "man" showed up in the form of the police, old distrust came back and fledgling community activism evaporated.
Maybe the community will take justice for this sorry father into their own hands and protect this daughter.

I've heard of selling your sister for beer money, but come on!!! Hehehe.
To: JediGirl
Was that sell, as in permanently, or rent? Sick, sick.

He'd need a pack of smokes to go with the brew. The prohibitionists new that tobacco caused crime and insanity 70 years ago. Let's get those evil brews and cigs off the market, and use the property forfieture laws to put some teeth in prohibition this time around.
Congrats again on the marriage gal. Are we going to get honeymoon pics? :-]

I'm not sure what's more disheartening... that this creep would try to sell his little daughter, or that the witnesses bugged out before the police arrived.
Poor, poor girl. If the mother was at school, at least she's trying to improve her life. Let's hope she can get the creep out of it and be reunited with her daughter as soon as possible.

There are times when I've tried to give my children away, usually after they've eaten a lot of sugar.
My dad has a habit of giving my brother's daughter sugar right before he goes home or worse, we're about to leave his place with her. It's a 2 hour drive home with her in the car (hour-forty five without her....LOL).
Hey, perhaps we should ban sugar too....For The Children, of course.

The WoSD hasn't exactly built up a lot of trust for the police in certain areas.

I apologize for Thud trying to sell the crew for beer money. But, the offer of $.32 for Scuttlebutt is hereby accepted, if in US funds.
