I sincerely hope the UN gets a brand news building, anywhere but in the US!

face-lift?
Try complete gutting and overhaul. A face-lift by definition is superficial.

I feel comfortably sure that NY will not issue a building permit for this. Or am I off the deep end?

Stay in the current building while building a new structure in a developing country. Then let us have our property back.

Greenland sounds like a good place to relocate the U.N or Anarticia. Now is a good chance to move the U.N. out of the U.S. I think it's time for another nation to be it's janitor. It's been a liabilty to our nation long enough.

Build it in downtown Kabul..
It won't cost as much.

"Utilities and repair costs could top $2 billion over 25 years and still leave the building with crumbling masonry and antiquated systems."
Seeing how the the Empire State building is almost 20 years older I would how they manage? Shouldn't it be 'crumbling' also.

The glass-and-marble Secretariat Building was constructed in 1949, before computers or terrorism or high energy costs. Today, many of its systems are obsolete, and maintenance is becoming difficult and disproportionately expensive. Those costs are borne by all member states, with the United States paying just over one-fifth of the total. ...
U.N. officials are hoping somewhat unrealistically, they acknowledge that a government, foundation or billionaire will step forward with an interest-free loan as the United States did in 1949 to finance the original construction.
Failing that, they are hoping for a new and separate assessment of dues from governments willing to shoulder the extra expense.
Summary of the above: The US made this whole entity possible, politically and economically, back in 1949, and though it is only one nation among hundreds, has paid over 20% of all infrastructure costs for the UN ever since. Nevertheless, the UN will always hate America and continue to gripe about the US not paying even more in the form of dues.
Speaking of dues, we (the UN) are hoping the US will just buy us a big new building like they did before, but if not we will raise dues to cover it. Oh yeah, dues are apportioned disproportionately to the good 'ol US, so if you dont donate it we'll basically create a new dues structure to steal it from you. Have a nice day.

It might be, if there was as much hot air and BS circulating through it as there is at the UN.

U.N. IS ON PRIME PROPERTY. JUST THINK HOW MUCH REVENUE N.Y. CAN PULL IN, BY REPLACING THAT UGLY BUILDING WITH CONDOMINUIMS FOR THE RICH LIBERALS.
To: wirestripper
You're off the deep end. Bumbug, Hitlery, and Chucky will see that the building permit(s) are approved in a NY taxicub minute.
Not ONE DIME for these SLIME. Let Atta Jr. use these worthless structures for target practice (yeah, yeah, I know, that's rude in front of the anniversary of 9-11...so let's instead just pretend E. 47th St and FDR drive is an abandoned warehouse in Harlem.

To Kofie and your U.N. cronies:
When Americans were dying and being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu, you were criticizing America for "being agressive to the people of Somalia and Africa."
Now you want, what, a few thousands of millions so you and your staff can have new digs?
Failing that, they are hoping for a new and separate assessment of dues from governments willing to shoulder the extra expense.
Oh, let's not mince words, shall we? By this you mean: U.S. Taxpayers!!! Because, we all know we can expect $3.42 from Africa and the 3rd world--so let America pay, correct?

That picture makes me angry. Why does the united states welcome these people to their shores? Maine recently accepted refugees from somalia.

Why does the united states welcome these people to their shores? I am of Irish, German, Russian descent. I remember my grandmother speaking German to my father once, and I was amazed. I had never heard her do that before, she only spoke in English.
My father explained that she never used her native tongue, except on rare occasions, because she said "I am an American, now, we are American now, do you understand me?"
The diplomatic squatters on 42nd street hate our nation. They envy our blessed land, and they always will. The monsters that destoyed the WTC center last year targeted those structure specifically: they were something their own nations could never hope to conceive or to build themselves.
Alas, the U.N. blood suckers will get their new $1,300,000,000 building. In fact, I have no illusions that they will get a $2,600,000,000 building if they covet one.

Maybe the U.N. diplomats could relocate to this country..................the rent is cheap and they don't have those terrible "Judeo-Christian values" that they despise so much......................

Somalia would be a great location and they wouldn't have to wipe out a playground 'for the chillun.'
The quickest way to renovate would be to remove that godawful gun-tied-in-nazis sculpture.

Among the most urgently needed improvements is the repair or replacement of the building's distinctive glass walls, which leak heat and cool air as well as water. Maybe they should have attended to their own affairs before criticizing the US on Kyoto?

Why spend money for a new building, there are miles and miles of sewers in New York. They would provide conditions more suited to the perverts now taking up space above ground.
This works for me !!!
