AMMAN Zarqa police are questioning a so-called witch doctor who on Wednesday reportedly beat an 18-year-old girl to death to exorcise what he believed to be a demon inside her, official sources said.
The victim, Mariam Salem, was taken by her family to the witch doctor in Zarqa after complaining of stomach pains, the source said.
The man stomped on the young woman's stomach and she fainted, the source said.
Her family rushed her to Zarqa Government Hospital and told the attending physicians that she was sick but did not describe the exorcism session with the witch doctor, the source said.
The young woman died a few hours after being admitted to hospital, the source said, adding that physicians became suspicious over her sudden death and referred the body to the Zarqa Forensic Medicine Department for an autopsy.
Pathologists Ibrahim Obeidat and Mohammad Harzallah concluded that the deceased hemorrhaged to death from multiple contusions, Harzallah said..
The amount of bruises on her stomach indicated she did not die of natural causes, pathologist Harzallah told The Jordan Times.
The pathologist said this was the second such case in Zarqa in a year. Last year, an emotionally disturbed 18-year-old girl also died in similar circumstances when her family took her to a witch doctor to exorcise what they considered a demon from her.

The witch doctor was first choice. What a screaming endorsement of their medical system.
