Click to enlarge photo RIYADH (Reuters) - An Iranian soft drinks firm is cashing in on a popular boycott of American products in Saudi Arabia by offering an "Islamic alternative" to U.S. brands such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola.
The Saudi distributor of Zamzam Cola, named after a sacred water well near the Muslim holy city of Mecca, said on Wednesday that demand was three times higher than forecast in the first week the drink went on sale in the east of the kingdom.
"The campaign of boycotting American products and the good quality of Zamzam Cola have given us excellent sales," al-Majarrah Foodstuffs Establishment general manager Firas Khawaja told Reuters by telephone.
Popular anger against the United States over its support for Israel amid the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation has sparked a campaign to boycott American products which slashed U.S. exports to Saudi Arabia by more than 40 percent in the first three months of 2002.
Majarrah said more than four million cans of the soft drink, which also comes as a diet version, were sold in the first week.
The company says it is more concerned about the ability of the Iranian supplier to meet demand when distribution begins in other parts of Saudi Arabia.
"Demand in the eastern province alone has put a lot of pressure on the Iranian supplier," Khawaja said.
He said Zamzam was planning to upgrade and expand production plants in Iran to meet growing demand for its drinks.
The firm was also considering setting up a plant in Bahrain or the United Arab Emirates, which would make products eligible for custom duties exemption and cut transportation costs.
Zamzam Cola already sells its products in Bahrain, Iraq and Pakistan and some African countries and hopes to expand its operations to other parts of the world.

Iran's version of Coke has hit the shelves of Bahrain's supermarkets as residents of the Gulf kingdom increasingly express their frustration at U.S. policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by boycotting American products.
"There is growing demand for substitutes to American soft drinks, which is what prompted us to import Zamzam-Cola," Iran's alternative to Coca-Cola and Pepsi, said an executive at the Bahraini-owned "Zamzam Soft Drink Drops".
"Consumers' response has been as good as anticipated," said the executive, who requested anonymity.
The Iranian beverage takes its name from a spring in the Saudi holy city of Mecca.
Millions of Muslim pilgrims who visit Mecca every year, either on the annual hajj or on other religious occasions, use large quantities of water from Zamzam, reportedly the world's oldest running spring, because it is holy and has healing properties.
In marked contrast with the close relations at official level between Washington and Manama, home to the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet and a "major non-NATO ally" of the United States, anti-U.S. sentiment spread like wildfire in Bahrain after Israel launched a massive military offensive in the West Bank in late March.
Bahrainis staged scores of anti-Israel and anti-U.S. demonstrations at the peak of the Israeli offensive, in one case triggering a crackdown by security forces when protesters hurled stones and petrol bombs at the U.S. embassy in Manama.
