[history]
It was with great regret that I heard the news that you may have Alzheimer's disease and eventually won't be able to challenge and debate in the powerful way you've done in the past.
You've handled this diagnosis with the same grace and dignity you've brought to the big screen, offering practical eloquence at a difficult time.

Sounds so nice isn't it? But a sugar-coated turd is still a turd. Don't these antigunners ever tire of espousing the same old tired mantra? Never mind. We already know the answer to that question. Her argument that "guns are only for killing" is meritless. The purpose of our national defenses are for killing as well. By her "logic", those too should be disbanded?
"Remember the Children." Gag. Spare me the platitudes, lady. You need to control your damn "kids", not my guns.

Everyone should not have the right to kill Exactly wrong, ma'am. I reserve the right to kill anybody who threatens me or other innocent life.

"Everyone should not have the right to kill..."
I wonder who she think should have the right to kill?
I guess only Rosie's family is worth protecting.

You need to control your damn "kids", not my guns. You hit the nail on the head. These kids are without proper parental supervision. They have no fear of getting in trouble. When I was growing up my godfather had lots of hunting rifles in his home locked up. I wouldn't dare and his own kids wouldn't dare touch them without his being there.

"Sugar-coated turd" bump. ;^)

But as one of the nation's greatest fighters for the right, could you, one last time, remind your fellow gun owners that if they want the guns, they have to know where they are? And that they have to take the blame when people kill people with their guns? Say what??? I'm not taking responsibility when people kill people with guns, or any object. I'll take responsibility when I kill someone.

Could you tell
gun (home) owners that when they bring
guns(bathtubs/stepladders/plastic bags) into their homes, they bring death into their homes?
Could you remind them that they won't know the day or the hour that death comes, but that the possibility of death is as much a part of the weapon swimming pool as its trigger drain?

I guess she would also object to the military, because the purpose of the military is to kill people and break things. (And that's just not nice.)
This article should be a moron alert!

Antigun advocates have attempted lately to disguise themselves as "gun safety" or "safe storage" advocates, rather unsuccessfully. Both of those issues have long been mainstays of NRA positions, and aren't quite as easy to subvert as the antigunners seem to think. This particular one gives herself away:
Those guys may not be the responsible gun owners you fight for, but they've got the guns nonetheless, because it's so hard to change the rules.
This is, in fact, the crux of the matter and she still doesn't get it. "Those guys" are criminals. They don't follow "rules" however you change them. All of the rules she wants to change will be obeyed only by the people she's pretending to accommodate, and she knows it.
To: Joe Brower
You would think that someone who (1) belongs to a gender which has significantly less upper body strength than the vast majority of criminal perpetrators and (2) wants to protect her child, would want to even the playing field.
To put it bluntly, I could easily beat her up if I wanted to. She's very fortunate that I am a Republican and will not choose to do so. But if she were to meet a Democrat in a dark alley . . .
To: Joe Brower
Seems to me that Heston has already done exactly what she wants him to do. Unless things have changed, the NRA is one of the leading advocates of gun safety training. In fact, one of the leading programs the NRA runs is the Eddie Eagle (do I have that right) program which teaches gun safety to children.
Maybe the author needs to actually find out what the NRA does before she asks them to change.

Below is the text of an email I sent her about this article. It probably won't do any good, but I felt better.
This letter is in response to your 8-21-02 article "Mr. Heston, Please Deliver Final Message."
Specifically, I would like to comment on your sentence: "Could you tell gun owners that when they bring guns into their homes, they bring death into their homes?"
Ma'am, both my father and grandfather were military veterans, and my father was an Army reservist. I grew up with several guns in my home and was taught to shot at age 9 - after a thorough grounding in gun safety and the rules for handling guns.
Never were the guns in my home a deadly menace to myself or anyone in my family. Not once have those guns jumped up and started shooting at people. They behave themselves quite nicely.
Guns are merely tools, which can be used for good or for ill, depending on what the person using them intends. Knives, rope, hammers, pitchforks, baseball bats, bathtubs, and even rocks are also used to kill. Blaming the tool for the actions of its user is simplistic - and wrong.
No, ma'am. Guns do not mean death. Human beings who either desire to kill someone else or are ignorant of gun safety cause death. Without the human factor guns are perfectly safe.
Therefore, your claim that "guns mean death" is false, inaccurate, misleading, and a disservice to yourself and your readers.

"Those guys may not be the responsible gun owners you fight for, but they've got the guns nonetheless, because it's so hard to change the rules..."Gee, maybe in Detroit they don't know it's already illegal to murder children in drive-by shootings...question is, where did they get the guns? I'm pretty sure there's a rule about that, too...
What a moron, not least because this is the tackiest approach to an "issue advocacy" column I've seen in some time, under the circ's...what extremely poor taste, and what a poor example to set for "the children"...!
