It sounds as if the whole bunch just watched the bear approach, methinks even egged it on by feeding it. But, I could be wrong

Apparently you are.

The mother was interveiwed and reported that the family was moving from their car to the cabin when the bear appeared suddenly.

The mother grabbed the children next to her on the poarch and pushed them into the cabin. When she turned around the bear already had the infant in the stroller who was a short distance away from the porch (nearer to the family vehicle).

Another adult, watching the tragedy unfold, chased the bear, who was escaping with the infant in it's mouth. The bear quickly dropped the infant.

I was left with the impression that the incident took only seconds.

"You just have to wonder."

Well, of course, we would wonder; I mean, a baby attacked in her stroller in view of parents and friends et al. . .

. . .but just do not see any reason to get into such detailed imaginings particularly when they must include a judgement against those present. . .at least before we know anything other than such a minimum of factual info.

. . .I mean, these folks may not even have noticed the bear approaching; much less been feeding/petting/egging/admiring it.

Yes, plenty of ignorant people, but like to give a at the least a few moments of doubt to those suffering such a painful loss.

...perhaps, they all ran for their cameras. . .well, so much for a point or two. . .and nothing personal.

Black bears are VERY territorial, which also accounts for their geographical spread.

They are moving south through WIsconsin at a relatively rapid rate and should get to Madison (from the Rhinelander area) by 2005.

BEST thing to happen to our legislators would be an invasion of the Capitol by hungry 500 lb. black bears.

Follow the rules, and if a bear visits your campsite, find a new campsite.

Here's another rule: if you're camping out in bear territory, have a .44 magnum loaded and handy. Also, know how to use it.

I just returned from visiting my folks in the Berkshires. They live near Tanglewood and in all the years they've been there we never saw a bear (30+ years). While we were there a big black bear decided to go through the trash just as my sister and her two children were walking past there. Apparently the enviro laws make it near impossible to get rid of a danger such as this without someone getting attacked first.

It changed my view instantly of the traditional after dinner walk.

Last year it was the beavers that are protected and were destroying acres upon acres of land. The owners had no recourse and were threatened with arrest if they harmed the beavers. Meanwhile, the owners just sit back and watch their land become worthless.

Thanks for the link but there is an error in the story. It was the fawn which was mortally wounded and had to be "put down". The bear lived to be attacked again not two weeks later in an almost identical situation.

In the first attack, the fawn carcass was taken back to the site and left in hopes that the 40 pound bear would come back to it.

In the next attack, an elk researcher driving in the same area, heard an animals cry and went to investigate. It was the same bear taking another fawn. Some tourist soon gathered around and some began to throw rocks at the bear in hopes of scaring it off but the researcher stopped them and gave them a little lecture on the food chain cycle. No one was charged in the last attack.

The Florida man's case should be up for a hearing shortly and I will keep an eye on the local papers for the outcome.

About 4 years ago there was an 880lb (yes 880lb) Blackie killed near New Bern, NC. It had been hanging around a hog farm for quite a while. From what I remember of the original article it took a few rounds to bring him down.

". A lot of jewish people go to camps there "

That has a distasteful ring to it.

I always warn people of the danger of leaving their small baby alone at the beach when Gulls are around. You should see the look when they think about it.

More people should carry bear repellent.

[pic of pistol]

Better file down the sight on that thing, so's it won't hurt so much when the bear shoves it up your A$$.

You know, if you live in the freakin' WOODS, you might expect to see some bears. Call me silly, but that seems to be the norm.

I feel horrible for this baby's family, but not for the hammerheads (here and elsewhere) who think we oughta whack all the bears.

Regards,
Snidely

I am going hiking there myself in 3 weeks. I try to go after Memorial Day every year. Missed out last year. I hope to NOT see any bears myself and most definitely would not try to take his meal from him.

True enjoyment is a skunk in your garage and the resulting fun when you walk into the garage and turn on the lights. Yes sir. Quite amusing.
