...keep Spanish out of their playground, cafeteria and hallways.

Sorry, but this is STILL, for now at least, a free country. You cannot tell someone they can't speak Spanish, I don't care what role they are playing at the time.

This is simply not a proper use of the principal's authority.

They can speak Klingon, for all I care -- just not while they are conducting official business for their employers.

Sure I can. If you work for me and you're on the job I can absolutely tell you what language you can use, especially if you're talking to the public or to a customer.

Now, I'd support teachers speaking any language to a child if it was a safety issue, either telling the kids about a dangerous situation, or trying to get some information about an injury or illness or hazard. But otherwise, I agree that anytime a teacher is talking to a student, it's instructional.

agreeing to the law isnt proper use of a priciples authority? what tree did you fall from?

people, i dont know about you guys, but i get frustrated with people who dont understand english. i dont go to stores or reseraunts if they dont understand my order. teach the kids to be bilingual if anything, but dont allow them to not have a clue whats going on and why "that man" is yelling about being allergic to the spices he asked you not to put in his food!

if the dems want "understanding" between everyone, why dont they advocate a common language? sounds like more bs to me

What the heck is "a proper use of the principal's authority" to you?

When I was a student in - mainly government - schools from 1965-78, you had to get the teacher's permission to go to the restroom. Talking out of turn in any language was good for a detention. Principals required teachers to not let kids wear hats in class. The principal of the other local high school banned baggy shorts. Be absent and you had to get a note from Mom - even if you were legally an adult (many were for several months as seniors) and old enough to enlist in the Marines without Mom signing.

And you're saying a principal can't ban Spanish - when he can ban students talking in English in class?

Get the sticker!

ENGLISH only in schools will educate and send the message that "you are in America, where the English language is the official/native tongue". Yes, we must implement same treatment throughout our nation to bring back a reality check. The greatness of our nation is preserved in presenting the nation for what it is: an American society, a culture proud of its heritage, a people willing to receive other nations, but not be deluted in the process. I don't want to see other cultures take over who we are.

You mean I can do anything I want at work even if my employer doesn't want me to?

The employer (and it this case, the taxpayers, ruled that it would be best for the children that they learn English. And the way to do that is to encourage them in and out of the classroom to speak English.

What does this have to do with "freedom". As far as I know, any teacher that objects to this is free to quit and find another job.

Public schools have always had the goal of preparing students to be productive and responsible citizens. Of course part of that process is training them to speak English in public, just as our ancestors did while they were acclimating.

And what about equity? If those Spanish children get to use their language in the playground (which can be a dangerous place if children can't understand the direction of supervisors) why not everyone else? A lawyer for "equal rights" could have a field day with that one!
