TURKEY AWARDS ISRAEL HELICOPTER UPGRADE

ANKARA [MENL] -- Turkey has awarded another military upgrade project to Israel.

Turkish officials said Ankara's Defense Ministry awarded the state-owned Israel Military Industries a project to upgrade up to 300 military helicopters. They said the Israeli company will install a range of electronic and defense systems in a deal valued at $110 million.

The modernization agreement was signed late last month by IMI and Turkey's Defense Ministry's Undersecretariat for Defense Industries.

The award calls for IMI to install chaff and flare systems that would protect the helicopters against surface-to-air missiles. Officials said the systems would also include equipment to automatically alert Turkish helicopter pilots of an approaching missile and the dispensing of electronic countermeasures.
