Conventional war

Stand back. Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy are facing off in a senatorial smackdown over the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

Massachusetts' Sen. Ted has been pressing hard to bring the political opera to Boston - telling each potential Democratic presidential candidate it would be a nifty 70th-birthday present.

Hillary is playing on Sept. 11 sympathies to bring the convention to New York. She's even recruited her husband to videotape a pitch - in which they had the chutzpah to include images of President Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Ted.

Madame Senator says it's just "friendly competition, obviously." She tells The Boston Globe: "I'm one of [Ted's] biggest fans ever."

She may have an edge. New York is in the lead financially, with a $75 million budget, followed by $50 million each from Boston, Miami and Detroit. What's more, Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe, who'll make the final call this fall, used to be Bill Clinton's chief fund-raiser.
