The Long & Short Of Our Allies Lack Of Support
8/11/02 | Maryellen Davies

Why is it that allies such as Great Britain, Germany, etc. are backing away from supporting the United States in our prospective war with Iraq?

Time and time again we hear them say they "need proof" that Saddam Hussein is a threat to the world. Translated, they are saying they need proof that Saddam Hussein is a threat to ANYONE ELSE besides Israel & the United States of America.

Hussein is determined, as was/is Osama bin Laden (depending on his body temperature or lack thereof) to bring an end to the world's one last true superpower. His only hope to do so is through terrorism WITHIN our borders.

Our allies wanting proof of Hussein's threat to anyone else is as insulting as it is selfish. What it says is "We know we're nowhere on Hussein's global hit list because he knows we'll fold up as fast as the French, so we're confident that he is no real threat to hurt us". The part that is infuriatingly insulting, or should be to all of us from sea to shining sea, is that it also says "He's only a threat to YOU IN THE USA, and we don't think it is terribly important on our account that you defend yourself...Have a nice day".

It's worse than insulting, it's shockingly stupid. If we fall, who do they think will be next? If they won't help because it's the right thing to do, one would think survival would at least spark their interest. Apparently the ostrich is the official state bird of the EU.

It's like a western where the cowardly townsfolk don't want the sheriff making waves with the bad men in town for fear he'll "make them mad".

Where is your proof that Britain is backing away from supporting the U.S. against Iraq? Where is the definitive proof? No tabloid rag articles, no loaded polls instigated by the media, post the quote from Blair saying its’ not very likely’, its ‘not likely’ or ‘no way’.

Or is you intention to turn this post into a bitching session?

I'm not proposing to speak for Tony Blair. He isn't the only politician in Great Britain & he's under some pretty stiff pressure from his people and his parliament to keep his nose out of it. What he actually does, history will record, but it isn't cut and dried that the Brits are 100% behind us. Rather it is far from it.

I’ve seen a lot of reports and posts about what Britain will or will not do. Some say they’ll go some say no.

Your whole post is full of statements dressed up to look like facts. Its based on hearsay and innuendo, but not one fact. You’ve been fooled by a divisive media, your a patsy. As for Hussein’s threat to British or other non U.S. interests, well he has been warned that any use of WMD on Britain or against British troops will see a nuclear response.

Perhaps you should look over the top of this thread with a really powerful magnifying lens...Do you see ANYTHING that links it to a news oranization? No? Then that means it must be an OPINION/EDITORIAL PAGE THREAD!

Op/Ed pieces do not HAVE to have facts checked in them because they aren't NEWS pieces, they're OPINIONS!

Now, as for your calling me names (ie; "Pansy"), it's just like a little boy who never grew up to go calling the girl with an opinion on the playground a name. I'll not dignify it by returning the favor...I grew up.
