KING COUNTY - A man was detained at Sea-Tac Airport Saturday night after he was found to have razor blades in his shoes.

The blades were found after the man twice triggered a metal detector at a security checkpoint.

Officials questioned the man overnight and were dealing with a language barrier. Port of Seattle police and the FBI were investigating.

Sunday morning he was transferred to jail in downtown Seattle.

Just who the man is and where he was flying were not disclosed. We were told he is a foreign national and was not using a U.S. passport. He was booked on a domestic flight, but his destination was not disclosed.

Sea-Tac stops man for razor blades in shoes

08/04/2002

By Eric Wilkinson, KING 5 News

SEATAC, Wash. - A Bellevue man was busted at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Saturday for reportedly having razor blades in his shoes. But the suspect tells a different story.

The man made it through one security checkpoint, but was stopped at a secondary screening toward the gate.

The big question being asked: Was it a big misunderstanding or something serious?

The man was preparing to board a domestic flight shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday when he set off a metal detector, said Sea-Tac Airport spokeswoman Clare Impett. A security screener checked him using a hand wand and had him remove his shoes.

When he did so, at least two razor blades fell out, Impett said.

Initially, the screener didn't notice them. She allowed the man to continue on toward his gate, but soon realized what had happened and alerted other guards, who detained the man.

KING
FBI agents questioned him for several hours, and he was arrested sometime after 1 a.m.

The man is described as a 29-year-old Bellevue resident travelling on an Indian passport from Seattle to Newark.

Authorities said the man told them it was all a big misunderstanding.

The individual indicated that the razor blades fell out of his shirt pocket when he bent over to remove his shoes, but the security screener was adamant that the blades fell out of his shoe.

While federal authorities try to figure out exactly what happened, the fact remains that someone with several double-sided razor blades slipped through one Sea-Tac security checkpoint. But airport officials say this case is proof the airport is secure.

Secondary screening is part of the process. The recognition of that is recognition that obviously everything might not be caught at the original checkpoint so we still feel the system worked.

The man is currently being held at King County Jail for investigation of a state weapons charge, Impett said.

The man was booked into the King County Jail Saturday night on state charges of carrying a dangerous weapon. He was bailed out Sunday and is expected to be arraigned Sunday or Monday.

The FBI said they don't plan to file any charges at this point but they are conducted extensive background checks if anything comes up.

Impett said she did not know what airline he was flying or where he was headed, and she had no information about his identity.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Anna knew she had to have some new shoes today, and Carlo had helped her try on every pair in the store. Carlo spoke wearily, "Well, that's every pair of shoes in the place."

"Oh, you must have one more pair ..."

"No, not one more pair...Well, we have the cruel shoes, but no one would want..."

Anna interrupted, "Oh yes, let me see the cruel shoes!"

Carlo looked incredulous. "No, Anna, you don't understand, you see, the cruel shoes are..."

"Get them!"

Carlo disappeared into the back room for a moment, then returned with an ordinary shoebox. He opened the lid and removed a hideous pair of black and white pumps. But these were not an ordinary pair of black and white pumps; both were left feet, one had a right angle turn with seperate compartments that pointed the toes in impossible directions. The other shoe was six inches long and was curved inward like a rocking chair with a vise and razor blades to hold the foot in place. Carlo spoke hesitantly, "...Now you see why...they're not fit for humans..."

"Put them on me."

"But..."

"Put them on me!"

Carlo knew all arguments were useless. He knelt down before her and forced the feet into the shoes.

The screams were incredible.

Anna crawled to the mirror and held her bloody feet up where she could see.

"I like them."

She paid Carlo and crawled out of the store into the street.

Later that day, Carlo was overheard saying to a new customer, "Well, that's every shoe in the place. Unless, of course, you'd like to try the cruel shoes."

Actually, that whole concept is being taken out of context. I'm not a fan of Islam, but when the Moslems refer to Islam as a "Religion of peace" it doesn't mean they are claiming to be non-violent. Here is a good description of the meaning of the phrase by Gabriel Oussani:

Grammatically, the word Islam is the infinitive of the so-called fourth verbal form of the regular intransitive stem salima, "to be safe", "to be secure", etc. In its second verbal form (sallama) it means "to make some one safe" and "to free", "to make secure", etc. In its third form (salama), it signifies "to make peace", or "to become at peace", i.e. to be reconciled". In its fourth form (aslama), the infinitive of which is islam, it acquires the sense of "to resign", "to submit oneself" or "to surrender".

Hence Islam, in its ethico-religious significance, means the "entire surrender of the will to God", and its professors are called Muslimun (sing. Muslim), which is the participial form, that is "those who have surrendered themselves", or "believers", as opposed to the "rejectors" of the Divine message, who are called Kafirs, Mushriks (that is those who associate various gods with the Deity), or pagans.

Interesting....thanks for the lesson.

But I believe when people refer to the "religion of peace" in the tongue-in-cheek manner I expressed above, they're referring to President Bush's politically-correct statements immediately after 9/11 rather than Muslim references to their own religion.
