This kind of selection process is overrated and overestimated. I am pretty sure history shows again and again it has some short-term strengths and many long-term weaknesses. After all Sparta lost.

Well, then, what's it take? What kind of selection process is better? We're all ears. And I mean that sincerely and respectfully. What attributes would you look for in building the perfect commando team?

I think that your analogy (of Special Forces to Spartans) is a false one. Perhaps the Spartans would be more aptly compared to the Imperial Japanese Army, where fitness, loyalty, and unquestioning obedience were the most important traits.
