Today at 5 p.m. KMJ Radio (Chanell 580; Fresno, CA) will be interveiwing Governor Gray Davis regarding the Amber Warning System just recently instituted in California and which was helpful in resolving the dual kidnapping yesterday.
KMJ has a huge audience in the central valley and along the central coast and will be an excellent campaign platform for Davis. Davis will certainly take credit for Amber Warning, developed in Texas, which is an effective tool to recover abducted children.
The problem is that Amber Warning in California was the result of hard work by (R) Assemblyman George Runner of the 36th assembly district. Runner introduced the legislation (Assembly Bill HR8) in early 2001. Davis strongly opposed the legislation and Runner fought Davis all the way until the bill was finally unanimously approved by the assembly in late May of this year. Davis was forced to adopt the legislation because of the unanimous vote and the system was just put into effect 10 days ago.
Don't let Davis get away with another lie. Call KMJ Radio (559-490-5800) in the next hour and strongly suggest that Runner's office be allowed to challenge Davis if he attempts to take any credit for the system.
Go getum!!
CALIFORNIA: Davis Finally Acts on Missing Child Alert
GOP Gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon congratulated Democrat Governor Gray Davis on his belated decision to finally implement the Amber alert system statewide.
"One week ago I urged Governor Gray Davis to immediately issue an executive order that would implement the child abduction alert system, known as Amber Alert, statewide. I also said that when this important task was completed, I would be first in line to praise and thank him. One week later, the governor listened to the requests of myself, and victims rights groups across California, and has issued an executive order that will implement the Amber Alert System," said Simon.
"Victims groups, led by the Polly Klaas Foundation, have tried for over a year to get the governor to implement the Amber alert system statewide in California to aid in the rescue of abducted children. But Governor Davis refused to act, and the system is still not in place statewide," said Simon last week in challenging Davis to finally take action on the issue.
GOP Assemblyman George Runner last year introduced legislation that would have created a statewide alert system, but Davis failed to act to lead the bill through the Legislature. [Emphasis added.]
Seems like something a Lib would knee-jerkingly object to. Taking credit for something he was forced to sign fits as well.
The downside for Libs with these Amber Alerts will be the accute awakening to the fact that a lot of sick puppies are amongst us all the time. In a state with 31M+ people the frequency distribution of such crimes may cause a lot of ill feelings toward those who would give lenient sentences to child molesterers. From what we've experienced lately, that's as it should be.
The interviewer gave Davis the oppurtunity to credit whomever may have been "responsible" for implementing the system. Davis went dead silent realizing the station had been warned.
When Davis recovered his composure he credited the public for their help yesterday, The Kern County and Los Angeles County Sheriff's departments for acting decisively and of course he credited himself for modifying the legislation to add all California's electronic highway signs. No mention of Assemblyman Runner, the Poly Class Foundation or Bill Simon's recent challenge.
The interviewer also asked Davis to expand upon his remark that the idea had started 2 years ago in the legislature.
Davis responded that although the legislation had been in process for some time he (Davis) acted when he recenlty received a plea from the Chief of the California Highway Patrol. Again no mention of the fact that he had opposed the legislation and was foot dragging until two weeks ago (coincidental to Simon's challange).
Davis did mention Assemblyman Runner in passing in the context that the Governor was working on a bipartisan basis to expaned the system and make it more regionally specific.
Credit Feepers for calling the station and demanding they act responsibly. My guess is that if it weren't for you the station wouldn't even have asked these two gently probing questions.
